Can someone help? are all subaru bottom ends the same, my crankshaft has recently gone, i need to replace it but its on a STi 3 RA, can i change the bottom end with any subaru bottom end or do STi's differ from the standard subaru ??
If the STi is different are STi's version 2,3,4,5 all have the same bottom end ??
Gratefull for any reply
cheers

the sti 3 has a stronger crank which allows the engine to rev harder (sti 2 revlimit 7000 and sti 3 revlimit 8000 from what ive been told) let me know if im wrong.
so if you fitted a sti 2 crank the is a good chance you would brake it.
i think the sti 3 4 and 5 have the same bottom end but i cant be too sure

STi's dont have a stronger crank. It is the pistons and valve train which enable the higher rev limit.
Your block will not take the later cranks, without machining, as the thrust bearing is on center main whereas the later (phase 2) blocks have the thrust bearing on the end main.

apparently powerstation only have 05 sti engines, they offered to rebuild mine for mega bucks £3k !!
Surely sourcing parts from Japan will be cheaper ??
What do you think ??

Did they say the '05 bottom end wouldn't actually fit?
When my UK MY00 had a big end go last year, they were offering then to fit one of their STI blocks to that, but I guess maybe the '05 block wouldn't fit the earlier car?
Failing that, you could do worse than talking to David at API engines, or maybe ScoobyClinic or Xtreme Scoobies.

So are all impreza (inc newage) bottom ends interchangable?
For example will the classic heads, inlet & exhaust manifold fit to the sti 7 block ???

any short motor (that is block, conrods and pistons) willl drop straight into any model and age of turbo impreza.
None of this swapping cranks is possible as they differ internally from year to year but the outside /overall dimensions of the block are all the same.
I don't know when you spoke to PS but, they are saying stocks are becoming limited now due to the lul before the 06 car comes out...
hence wanting to hold on to a few for our own projects in the pipeline
the 05 sti short motor WILL fit.

echo fuzz,
i bought one of the PS engines, and have just transplanted all my P1 stuff on it. the only difference is the new age engine has an extra crankcase breather at the rear which needs blocking off.
other than that its a plug and play job!
