what oil to use
A good quality 10W-40 is recommended, Semi-Synthetic is fine .... the manufacturer doesn't really matter, despite the hype you will now get!
---------------------------
when to use it AND when to change it
See your Service Book, its as simple as that
---------------------------
where to get it
Try the Motor Factors
---------------------------

Each tank of fuel should tell you that you need an oil change, contact the Subaru garage and tell them that you are doing 250miles to a tank and need them to do a 250 mile service!!

sorry but that is the biggest load of crap... there is no way you need to change ur oil that often!!!!! seriously if your driving the car hard and everyday then change the oil every 3000 miles. that is healthy for the car. i have been strongly recommended to use 10w 60 fully synthetic millers motorsport oils!!! (the best) not the kind of stuff you get from halfords. Dunno where to buy it...i'm sure places stock it. The specialist who services my car keeps it on sight so i never have to buy any.
Using the correct oil and changing it regularly is the key to keeping your motor in good health.
Think pete was taking the **** a little bit.

For normal Scooby use, a quality 5W40 semi or fully synthetic is ideal. If you intend to track, or tend to drive everywhere extremely hard, or are running serious mods which lead to higher running temps then move up to a 10W50 or maybe even 15W60. Change every 10k is fine (after all, it's what's recommended during the warranty) but like many, I'd always change it every 5k or 6 months. Always use an OE Subaru filter and new sump washer and pre-fill the filter (it takes a while).
Recommended brands are Motul 300V, Silkolene ProS, Millers or Mobil. You could do worse than contact Simon at www.opieoils.co.uk or hunt him down as "oilman" on here.
P!$$y Pete will be along soon to dismiss me for it, but the guy sells quality products, at competetive prices with an excellent service. Lewis gets upset that the guy freely shares his time and technical knowlege with interested enthusiasts.

The bloke posts on every BBS possible to sell his products ...... he can't find the data sheets for Carlube TripleR, now - that would have been helpful (but, of course its not in his business interests to find out that CarLube TripleR is actually a top oil for little money, is it now?)
I am absolutely sure he sells quality oils at reasonable prices and knows how to retail oils, apparently, he also gives excellent service. He is also probably a very decent chap to know.
But lets not confuse the business with the 'help' ...........
'Born Yesterday' springs to mind ......... I'm a bit longer in the tooth

Thats not what your lover Oilman recommends!!
Isn't it 15W-50????

For daily short journeys, yes change it more often than the recommended 10K - again as per handbook. Neither of these comments is unique to Scoobies or Scoobynet.
And the number in front of W is unimportant once the oil is up to temperature. For instance a 5W40 or 10W40 or 15W40 are all the same "thickness" at 100 degrees. At cold temps, the first number isimportant - if you live in the North pole you would probably want a 0W40

Its just like advertising in a car magazine - so, not quite sure how that lends anything to the debate?
And yes, 15W-50 is WAY too thick for road use in this country - according to Redline (who REALLY know about Oils!) - the added drag on the Engine is not good news!

Anyone who buys a 52 WRX and doesn't even know when to have the Oil changed is a ............, well, you fill in the gap!
If he knows nothing about when to change then he will NOT be doing it himself (one would hope!) so he would get sorted out pretty sharpish by the corner garage.

And yes for normal road use generally in the UK, w-50 is too thick, but for hard road use or in extreme temperatures it is OK. Also, IIRC the Subaru recommended oils are slightly thicker for new age over classic. Subaru, like all manufacturers, show a range of oils and w-50 is at the upper end for hard use.

I am also less suspicious of Oilman as he is selling 6 different brands, and several types of oil of each brand. If he came on here and said the only oil for your Scooby is Oilman's 10W40 then I would wholeheartedly agree.

firstly i'd like to thank trashman, sideways, an corradoboy for their advice.
secondly, i have read the manual, but what the heck is the point of having disscusion on decent forums like this IF everyone followed the manual exactly, what fun would that be.........eh.
and Mr lewis...........hmmm....... i've seen so many posts from other scoobynetters always saying " don't listern to anything this guy say" "pslewis chats out of his a$$" etc etc but i was stupid to think that maybe when you were giving me some normal advice, rather than just wasting time, anyway i ain't gana lose any sleep about it.

I would like to recommend some Olive Oil for your car, changed at 100,000miles - would that be FUN enough for you??

"When should I change the oil" its in the book in your car, muppet!
"Do I really have to change the oil every 250 miles or am I a complete moron?"
The Technical Forum is for people who ask questions like:-
"What is the part number of the MAF Sensor because my tyres have a puncture and a faulty MAF has been shown up as the culprit"
A few of words of wisdom for you, "grow up and have a laugh"
