Question Confused about my Engine!!??

I've owned a 99 - T plate UK Impreza Turbo 2000 since december. I went to get a dump valve fitted and they told me its got a 98 Intercooler, nothing to worry about, its probably just a late registered 98 model. I tried to order the dump valve today and when i gave them the engine model no. they tell me that it ran from 93 - 96 on that number. The car was HPI'd etc before i bought it and nothing showed up from that, it was a very low mileage one.

As you can appreciate i'm now very very confused about my car and ANY help would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou in advance,

John.

Does the engine number correspond to the log book and has it ever been changed?

93-96 engines are Phase 1 and look a bit different as they use 90deg turbo entry, slanted i/c etc.

Was it the main dealer who told you about the engine being different?

Thumbs up

No, it was a performance garage that said it was a 1998. I've just spoken to Subaru UK who said its definitely a 1998 production so the engine will be the same, the i/c is flat with the body.. I'm still a bit confused with things. The engine and chassis numbers are the same on the log book as they are on the car. doesn't look like anythings been changed/manipulated or anything like that. Cheers for the suggestions to help though

Might sound like a daft way to tell exactly what year the car was made, but does it have brake calipers on the front that have 'SUBARU' on them?? the 98's don't have them, the 99's do..... won't tell you if it's the right engine, but it'll help age the car.....
Might be worth posting a picture of the engine bay, there are a few subtl differences between the 98's and 99's, so a picture should be able to sort it out once and for all.

I have spoken to Subaru Uk who inform me its definitely a 98 Production car, it doesn't have the SUBARU calipers so definitely a 1998... Thanks for your help though

Well you wont have to worry about what engine you have if you fit a dump valve as within 3 to 6 months you will have an opportunity to replace it

Why will i have the chance to change the engine then? I was advised by several friends and a few garages that HKS BOV's don't cause any problems with the engine?

Should i expect problems then??

Cheers for everyones help, just incase anyone was wondering though, the positives i've heard about HKS and BOV's on Impreza's, far outweighs the negatives and to be honest, loads of Subaru specialists (i know Scoobyworld only sell Bailey) but they wouldn't sell them if they had nothing but complaints about Dump Valves..

Thanks again
