Welcome!

It depends what car you're starting with, but you can get close to 350bhp in any Scoob without massive expense. Decat exhaust, ported headers, bigger turbo, bigger inter-cooler, fuel pump and maybe injectors, ECU/remap. This is what I have gleaned from ScoobyNet over the years. I've done this, but with the help of a US spec 2.5 block (£1,500-ish) for loads of box-busting torque

For 400bhp you need in addition a 6-speed box, trick pistons and rods, front-mount IC, injectors, induction kit, headers. A lot more cost and work for 50bhp, but you can build up to 500bhp or more from here if you have skill and money, and enjoy turbo lag, no power below 4,000rpm, and ditches - law of diminishing returns and all that.

That should give you some food for thought, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to power

Don't forget to uprate the running-gear. OEM brakes and suspension are not up to this level of performance. Stock brakes on early models (2-pots) can be scary.

Cheers,

Richard.

Hoppe is spot-on.

If you really want a 400 bhp and 340/400 torque Impreza, start with a 6 speed Sti.
You then have the trans, the brakes, and a much better (and more expensive) starting point.
Pulling a bug-eye car to 400x 360 say will add about £3000 to the bill.
A chassis to suit it will add about another £700 for a decent job.

Sometimes such a car appears on 'For Sale' and they are an absolute bargain, and one already done is a very good way to meet your goal.

Good luck, nice to see a Drag Racer on here, I 'did' Santa Pod in the early 70's..

Graham. (welcome to you too! )

i built a wrx (my95) to 420bhp/370ftlbs for around 4k

all labour was done by myself bar the mapping that was done by Andy Forrest.

i sat down with a friend and worked out what i needed for 400bhp then watched the for sale section and waited for bargains.

things are a little cheaper now so you should be able to do it for under 4k now.

if you need any help drop me an e-mail

I have a thread in projects that could be of interest, its about 330BHP at the mo, but another turbo, remap and clutch is all that is now needed for 400 BHP.

It'll cost me £4200, then wait for the gearbox to fail....

If sticking to a 2.0 engine which it sounds like you want to do, I would use an STi 5 speed gear box (or fit PPG gears to a non-STi box), with uprated organic clutch. In the interests of lag I would try to keep the OEM headers but have them well ported (Harvey's work on these comes well recommended) and use an STi new age TMIC with big scoop. I would also stick with standard internals as if they are in good nick and treated well I think they stand a reasonable chance of lasting at 400 BHP.

You will find it easier to get to 380ish which is a doddle than crossing the watershed to 400 which is another raft of expenditure.
At that level you will eventually break most 5 speed boxes and this makes Alan Bell's car an extremely attractive option.
When Jonny and I sat down the list was something like this :

Exhaust and downpipe
Induction system with cold air
Fuel pressure regulator and pump
Headers and uppipe
Injectors
FMIC
Turbo
ECU and map

Remember you will always get project "creep", things like Heat Wrap, flywheel, pulleys, catch tank, instrumentation etc. Your shopping list is about £3,500 with mostly second hand bits gathered over a few months. So you end up spending about £4K on this list. The fact Alan's car already has a 6 speed box and is close to your ball park figure makes it very attractive. Your expenditure may be a bit of minor fettling.
