Talking FAO Oilman - a question for you!

Hi Oilman - In your humble opinion - what is the best 5W40 Synthetic oil on the market and what do you charge for it?

I have an 03 WRX that uses about 1-2 litres every 10K - and I would like to cut this slightly whilst having something that does the business (BTW I use peak power on a very regular basis)!!
I currently use Castrol GTX Magnetec 5W30 (as put in by my local Scoob Dealer - SGT).

Where are you based and how would I go about purchasing from you?

Your using 5w30!
to start with, thats not a recommended oil unless your running below 0 deg c, even then its only to get hot quicker, not to use on a daily basis.
You should be looking at a good 10-15 rated oil for a turbocharged impreza, nothing less.

the "best" in my own humble opinion is without a doubt MOTUL...........................

plenty of peeps supply it, and you can even get better 'normal' prices than some group deals offered!!

Tony, the 10W / 15W is its temp at ambient, not operating, so the second number is the more important one in our climate. 0W is really for extreme cold climates, even as cold as it is here - I was using 15W Motul. Probably a bit too thick, but many others are using it.

I know you know this however, but 5W's are actually ok - as long as the second number isnt 30

I believe you also advocate Millers oils? How would you rate their CFS range (Especially as they have increased the ester content) in comparison to the other more "fashionable" oils mentioned on here?
I'm currently using CFS 10/40 in my 03 STi PPP

Firstly, I wouldn't use the magnatec, it's just not a good enough quality in my opinion.

Good proper synthetic (pao/esters) I would recommend and of course sell before someone pipes up are Motul 300V 5w-40 (pao/ester), Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 (pao/ester) or Motul 8100 5w-40 (pao - like mobil1) or Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 (pao like mobil1) I have others but consider these as the best quality ones.

Check in group buys section, all explained there or PM me.

Cheers

MB, i know the first rating is for ambiency BUT.....
a 5 rated 40 wont be as good as a 10 rated 40, both synthetic as the 5 will loose its capacity for holding together at higher temps that you see in a 600 deg plus turbocharger, thus the reason i never rate a 0 or 5 oil as they cannot handle these temps, oilman for some reason showed that a 5 rated was the same as a 15 rated but at 40 degrees difference and 40 degrees is a lot of heat.

The HTHS is at 150c (bearing temp) the higher the better. Simon said "all round protection" and in winter with cold starts at 0c and lower a 0W or 5W has ultra quick circulation.

Redline
5w40 4.6
10W40 4.7
15W50 5.8

Motul 300V
5W40 4.51
15W50 5.33

Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 = 4.07cp
Silkolene PRO S 10w-50 = 5.11cp
Silkolene PRO R 15w-50 = 5.23cp

M1
0W40 3.6
15W50 5.11

Just to add, a 10w-40 has to be 3.7 to meet API and ACEA.

I have a long list of comparisons, the above are all decent synthetics, the Shells, Essos etc don't compare as well, neither do the Castrols. All these are built to pass spec (3.7) only. A bit like pasing an exam or passing with honours!

Oilman - I'll PM you!

I think the Motul seems to be highly rated - but the 300V or the 8100?

300V is ester/pao and 8100 apart from the 0w-40 is straight poa (like Mobil1).

They're both good oils and the 8100 is probably more suited to road cars unless you want to pay the extra for 300V.
