I am also running a MY95 Japanese import and I am always running the car on Optimax + Octane Booster (NF) until I get a remap next year. The difference in octane rating between the UK fuel and the Japanese is about 4 RON so I wouldn't risk it running on just 97 or 98 RON fuel.

Getting a Knockling is a good idea but if you want to run the car safely at UK fuel the best route is a remap (ScoobyECU) or an aftermarket ECU.

I hope that helps.
