Default engine death rattle

i have a major problem
would like a few ideas on what it could be before deciding which route to take.

during a err.... high speed run this afternoon, had no activity on the KL, noticed the oil temp up at about 115 deg. throttled off and let it slow right down and let the oil temp drop.

upon just starting to drive it again normally, all is fine at low revs, but at about 2K it starts to knock loudly. i have no smoke at all from the exhaust, so dont think a piston has detted to bits.

its difficult to hear exactly where the knock is from. most cars i have heard that have done a big end clatter at idle like a bag of spanners. mileage is 63K

at 2K i only have about 4 bar of oil pressure (normally 6+)

car is a P1, with full decat, induction kit, headers and a BRD tek3 remap. was on the RR about an hour before, unfortunately was having a play with a mate on the way home.

ideas? drop the oil and check for bits, to confirm a main or big end is shot? what else could it be?

Only car I've ever had a rod leave through the engine block was a mk1 fiesta Ghia 1.1, and tha knock for many weeks beforehand was manifested quite obviously in the bottom of the block being reasonably quiet on downhill/overrun, and noisiest under heavy engine load when it sounded like a terminator woodpecker was going mental inside the block.

To be honest if yours is knocking, stop driving it. It'll be expensive to get the motor stripped and have the big ends/shells etc changed, but cheaper than buying a new block too!

Same prob i had today , exactly the same , i aint got a boost gauge or anything like that or oil pressure , but i was boosting @ 140mph then i there was a loss of power , then when i got to the roundabout i could hear knocking , the only difference is mine was knocking on idle , dunno much about car internals so cant really give advice , but a few people thing maybe my big end has gone.
Hopefully its not serious , but i bet i can guess how youre feeling right now, I feel for ya big time , ill be praying for my scooby and your's tonight

in the early stages you will normally only hear when under a load of some description.....................if you continue to drive it will almost certainly occur more frequently until it knocks at all times even when idling..................

would suggest you have it checked asap, as if stripped now the bill will be far less than when a rod decides to have an "early exit"!!!

just dropped the oil and it is clean as a whistle. fired it up and still have the knock at 2K+. so im assuming its top end. can you get the heads off with the engine in situ?

You could try taking it to a subaru specialist.

now mate i know how your feeling mines just gone loads of back pressure started with a rattle on start up nothing on tick over soon as you rev and drop off straight away there came the rattle so now burning loads of oil out of exhaust out of dump valve out of dip stick and out of oil filler cap and yes mine is propper ****ed i dont believe that a rebuild is cheaper than buying a block you can get a block for around 450 where as shells start from 100 quid then there is three to four days labour pending on who is doing it then there is your head gasgets there is another 100 quid so there 200 quid before you start and labour will be more than that nice one mate neil

Stockar is on the button with this one I reckon.

from what you described, Big ends mate, in the early stages.

by the time you have priced up bits to repair it (it's probably picked up in the bore as well) you may as well buy a ready built short motor.

Powerstation have Sti7-9 short motors stacking up, as we take them out to do the type 25 conversions. £800 quid I think and it's a straight swap.
