Default Engine Oil

Off to Bedford Autodrome for a spin on May 2nd and to the Nurburgring in July so plan on changing the eng oil before each event. Any advice on what oil would be best? Was going with fully synthetic 5W40.
Also how many litres is needed for an standard oil and filter change? The service manual says 3.7min to 4.7max......but is this for a dry engine???
Any help greatly appreciated.

Would recommend Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 or Motul 300V 5w-40 as two of the best ones. Look in "group buys" as I have a limited offer on them now.

Cheers

The best oils you can get for an impreza will be the 15w50 Motul 300v, Mobil 1 motorsport 15w50 and the 10w60 castrol RS, DONT use the magnetec, its not that good.
As for oil changes, if your not sure, dont do it yourself, the oil level on my MY03 JDM STi is 4.5ltrs, this includes filling the oil filter, if you dont fill the oil filter, there is a very good chance you could blow your engine.
It costs about 60 quid to get a garage to do it for you if you provide your own oil.
Id also suggest you speak to John Felstead, he has done quite a few trackdays in impreza's and can give you some pointers

Viscosity depends on the year/spec.

No it doesnt.
Subaru dont recommend the use of certain types of oil, 5 rated is one (5w30 in the handbook with BIG WARNING on turbocharged cars) but i still wouldnt use a 5w40 (also not in the handbook) either, 10w40 is the minimum they recommend, and unless you have owned a scoob for a while, you understand why you dont use 5 rated oils.
You want to use the 15w50 (as per STi product for impreza's) or the 10w60.
I wouldnt use anything else except the 10w40 semi synthetic (but once you have used the good stuff there aint no going back )

Tony,

We've been through this before, all post 2000 scoobies actually require 5w-30 or 5w-40 as per the handbooks. Earlier models have 10w-40, 10w-50 or 15w-50 recommended but no where is 10w-60 mentioned in anyones handbook.

Cheers

i'd only use either 15w-50 or 10w-60 synthetic and nothing else.

hmmm, seems like opinion is divided. I'm not doing the change myself as I can't be bothered. I know abit about engines as I'm a project manager for Nissan in their Engine Design Dept but was unsure about what oil to use in Scoobys.
The blokes at work suggest a 5W40....good cold start protection as circulation is quick and good viscosity at higher temps, plus a fully synthetic doesn't break down as quick as a semi synthetic under high temps.
Difference between 5W40 and 10W40 (so I'm told) is the cold temp start protection but try and find a fully synthetic 10W40...it's difficult (well I haven't managed to find any in the shops round here).
I have opted for a 5W40 fully synthetic but can't find the Silkolene or Motul and need it for tomorrow......so I've opted for the Mobil1 5W40.....
