MY01 Decat etc
Hi
I am sure you are all tired of such questions but I need to ask anyway.
I have purchased a HKS Hi Power exhaust which I want more for looks and sound than for the performance gains.
I was however intending to decat the up and down pipes at the same time.
Now apparently this gets complicated due to boost spikes etc.
Has anyone fitted a decat up and down pipe without Ecutec?
If so which make of pipes?
It is basically a cost thing as Ecutec is fairly expansive here in South Africa and I did not want to spend the money all at once.
What sort of sensors are there in the down pipe and what do you do about them? I know about the EGT probe that is to protect the cat but is there another one? do these cause complications?
Has anyone successfully taken the cats out of the OEM up and down pipes?
And then fitted them to a 3inch system?
Thanks in advance
Stretch
PS I did search the forum but did not find exactly what i was looking for before you think I am lazy :-)

Is the car a WRX or STI?
IIRC, both can benefit from a decat without a remap, although 2001/2 STI's did sometimes suffer from boost spikes which was fixed by fitting a 3 port boost solenoid. The WRX's didn't suffer from the boost spike, I ran my WRX with PPP ecu and decat for nearly 2 years with no problems except for the bloody CEL - this will trigger due to the cats being removed but is easily switched off with a CEL fix which tricks the ecu into thinking that the cats are still in place and operating effeciently.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.
Especially as you are telling me what i want to hear :-)
I only thought to add that it is a WRX after I pressed send.
As it happens i have a Prodrive kit fitted as well.
What type of downpipe did you have fitted? Bell mouth or blanked off?
What were the sizes of the variouse pieces of exhaust.
Did you use heat wrap for the up and down pipes?
If so how long does it last?

Had mine fitted about 2 1/2 years ago and I went for a full Hayward & Scott (Scoobysport) system. Up/Down pipes, two piece centre and back box. IIRC the entire system is 2 1/2 inch but don't quote me on that. Didn't use any heat wrap.
I've since replaced the back box for a Blitz Nur Spec as I fancied something a bit bigger/louder/shinier

Ive got Scoobysport up/down pipes on my wrx-the downpipe is an open neck type.
As Chris said, you will get the CEL come on.You can get a CEL fix which should help fool the ecu,but they dont allways work.An ECUtech remap can map the P0420(cat below efficiency code) out.The way ive got around it is by buying a SECS monitor, which allows you to clear the CEL along with reading all other possible fault codes+you can read all sorts of data from it.
