removing sound deadening material
is there an easy way to do this? or do you have to just chip away at it using a chisel or something?

You could try a heat gun and scraper otherwise when its cold a bolster chisel by hand seems to break it up.

This is a deep winter job:
Firstly, the deadening goes nice and brittle at about -5 degC
Secondly, you will be good and warm as the work to get it off is killer!
If you want to preserve the floor's paint job then it is a hair dryer/heat gun and a plastic scraper. Or leave it in the full summer sun to soak and attack it.
Removing it really increases noise!
