Exclamation Urgent Oil level Question...!

Just been on a long journey, and checked my oil this morning, and it was near enough empty.

So, I topped up with oil when the car was cold and did not put too much in. Drove to Halfords approximately 30mins drive and re-checked my oil when i got there and it was way over what it should be...

Has this happened because the oil is hot? or shall i be looking to drain some out?

When the oil is hot it more readily returns to the sump. When you first fill the car, there will be a load of oil that stays in the Pass. side cylinder head. A quick journey at operating temp will see that oil get into the sump.

I think when hot the full mark is the hole, and when cold it's the notch. If it's just a few mm above the notch then I wouldn't worry. It's not easy to drain only a little out. SO it you do drain it into something clean so you can put it back in if required.

Level ground is also essential for checking the oil.

Looking at the dipstick:

Notch

Hole (F)

Hole (E)

Notch

This morning, the level was just under the empty hole, so I topped it to just under the full hole thinking I will check this when I get back from Halfords.

Now the oil is showing above the full notch, just where the dipstick arm begins to bend.
