SECS or Knocklink?
Evening folks,
I'm pretty new to Scooby ownership, and before I spend some of my hard earned, I’d like some advice on the checking for knock. I’m cr@p with a screwdriver and if there is anyway I can avoid using pointy things in anger for long periods on the car I will. So, I was wondering if there is a difference between the readings on a secs monitor and a knocklink in terms of registering det? I’m thinking of getting one or the other, but not sure which. I’ve got a standard JDM STI v6 on 30k miles which has been in the UK since October 2000. I’m running on 97 RON fuel + booster currently and will get a remap soon when the bank balance allows, but was wondering what is the best way to check for det in the meantime? Thanks in advance all.

Im not to sure how the sec's monitors knock correction with a classic ecu, I know its different to a new age which I have but
if you buy a knock link it will be more obvious when you have a problem - big red flashing lights mean slow down
its not easy to read a sec's when you have the pedal to the floor
im sure one of the gurus will be able to tell you why a secs is not as good to monitor knock on a technical basis

Correct me if i'm wrong, cos i don't even have a scooby yet
But i believe the SECs monitor uses the exisiting OEM sensor (unreliable), whereas a KL uses a new independant reliable Bosch sensor.

On a Classic, the SECS knock correction reading is only showing the amount of timing (in degrees) that is being added to or subtracted from the ignition map.
As said above, a Knocklink is what you want to give a visual display of detonation, even if the box is a bit unsightly
