Default Help - Blown major part?!?!

hi all

just on me way home down by-pass and no-one about so yep went and gave it some....
now i have major detting on me knock link and a loud knocking noise.
i know its my fault but **** happens!
Theres no smoke, turbo and tickover fine.
Could it be a valve(s) &/or a knackered cam?
Any suggestions asap welcome as im not going drive it until fixed and i need a car!

Thanks in advance

cheers bats,

the sound seems to be comming from the top front left as you look at it? does that make sense? would the big end bearings be a specific area for noise?

I have also noticed it will only do it say 95% of the time and that 5% will be far quieter!? this is mad - i take it its a compression test required?

a m8 of mine had something similar
clanking type noise coming from top left as you look at engine
turns out it was the petrol he put in
dozy prat had run his 94 wrx on normal unleaded(wasnt long though)
filled up with shells finest and it was ok from then on

If dump the oil out into a container and you see lots of little bits metal then its your big end bearings.

The above link is a part of the oil filter you can see the little bits of metal.

Don't even consider 2.5 ing a 93 car, the cost to get it to run right will exceed the value of the car by heaps.

I've replied to your email - talk to me tomorrow and l'll put you straight.

best replacment engine to go for would be an sti v3/v4, you will need a mappable ecu for it though.

if a mappable ecu is off the cards stick with a pre 96 engine.

i've gone off the 2.5l.... wonder why!?!?!

cheers for replies - great help.

api david - got your email mate, just found out that i cant get my car in at me mates garage till sun/monday. so i will help strip it down to see the problem and go from there. Your offer sounds promising though, but will see how much part(s) required cost first before whole engine.

thanks again.

This sounds very familiar to my scenario. Engine sounds really clattery over 2500rpm. My Subaru dealer reckons that the big end is likely to have gone - took 8 hours to diagnose today - although when I asked what they had done to determine this they
said they had just turned the engine over.

Now, they are suggesting at their 75/hour labour rate that it will cost around 800 quid
to strip the engine down to determine this, and 800 to put back together PLUS any parts or additional labour, plus VAT no doubt also.

Unmodded MY02 WRX, 31000 miles, New Import - NO warranty.

My questions are (i) can I get this done cheaper by a specialist? (ii) as the engine will be in bits - can I add any extra perfomance at this point? (iii) any recommendations for around the Watford area. (iv) car had just had its 30000 mile service - could that in anyway be related?

Any help much appreciated !!

Not sure what area API are but they are highly recommended. Yes your service could be the route of the bearing problem. If your garage did not disconnect the crank senor and crank engine over until the oil light goes out for oil pressure.

API David,

What do you think to my engine woes? I will need to give my Subaru dealer an indication tomorrow as to whether they should carry out the work.

Don't you still have the Subaru 3 year warranty even if a Euro parrallel imported car? It's all Europe now, innit! I'd try them on that front; use Trading standatds if not sure! They are quite good!

Worth a try mate!

Question Why do 2.5 l short blocks cost so much to get working right?

Still wondering, but no one tells me anything these days...
What is the cost ( after 2.5l short engine, & gasket set & fitting ) to get it to work right on a UK or import 2.0 l model? ( Is it wiring loom too? )

Assuming car has other performance mods already ( headers, exhaust, induction, injectors, fuel pump & reg, mappable ECU, intercooling, etc ?? ) .
Seems the ones that cost / fail are the ones that get bigger turbos and all sorts of extra mods on top of std car/engine? Or people push them hard...

Timmy Yes call me.

Blue Call me.

Vulnax Long conversation that! IF the extras are done as you suggest, induction, mappable ECu, injectors, intercooler, etc etc then it may well work OK

But until you do that stuff there is little chance of it running anything like acceptably.

The problem is that, as a professional company any work we do has to be right and people won't accept that ' it runs ok when it warms up', or ' it misses a bit at 3000 rpm but you can drive through it.' A car has to be right first time and in many cases only money can fix it. Amatuers fitting stuff in their garages at home put up with B/s like that.

Then you get into the argument as to whether the car is worth the cost to do it right.

API,

I will likely be in contact again tomorrow, I am trying to get this done under some kind of warranty with subaru 1st, because the more I think about it the madder I get, an engine with 31000 miles on the clock should not disintegrate. I was hoping to buy a motorbike for the summer - but this has blown any hope of that out of the water.

Try and get it done through garage but take ALL your engine related mods off!
