next turbo up from tdo5? & maf prob? :-(
Hi all
Got my93 wrx think the turbo is in need of tlc or a change up modification. What is the next step for it? upgrade the whole turbo for a bigger model of some sort or upgrade the internals of it? But do not want to go into massive amounts of cash
Also the past 4 days my afr has been permanantly showing lean on any type of driving style - is the maf on the way out? I am also using loads of fuel and previous to the lean running it would have fits and flood the engine by running on very rich.....
please advise on this as its doing my head in
ive had new plugs/coil packs/lambda/pressure duty solenoid.
Running HKS Ind.kit, full decat, all samco hoses, optimax, scooby ecu at 15.5psi.
cheers in advance.
tim

Steve, suppose he could convert to a 18 / 20g? Depends what it is at the moment. That would warrant supporting fuel / air upgrades to get the best though.
As for the AFR - MAF may well be the cause, normally ok on early cars though. Always good to suspect the gauge so you could get a multimeter on the wires going into it.

Timmy, you need to think what you want from the car and that will probably dictate the size / type of turbo you need - which will in turn provide you with the info on the supporting mods.
Your current turbo is a bit limited if you want to break the 300 bhp barrier. Full decat, headers, pump, good panel and essential remap will help you get to STi levels.
For basic power a scoobyecu will do you, and is a big difference. Bigger power the Andy F Apexi power FC is well rated.

when i had r.road tune and had my hks fcd on and manual boost i ran 19psi but had major det at 317 bhp & 302 lbs torq, so took it off straight away so im guessing that the 15.5 psi chip will be running 290/295 bhp?
want to aim for a reliable 320/330 to be honest. I know pretty much all needs upgrading etc but its what i like doing and at me own pace!
oh forgot i already have the walbro pump that can handle 400 bhp.
Whats with the panel filter? i tried putting mine back on and it did not seem as lively especially at high revs. so what would be the advantage ? or just safer bet for the maf? (which i think is on its last legs!)

Surprised it made that much, it may well be that an Apexi FC could provide the fuelling you need to get the max from the turbo you have, speak to Andy F.
Induction kits are fine, but nearly all of them do a great job of sucking in hot air from the engine bay, which oftem means they are less effective than the airbox. At higher BHP's the standard box can become a restriction, but excellent otherwsie. HKS are known to give a lot of air, but poor filtration. Ideal one IMHO is the Performace Subaru one (K&N) with a heat shielding box round it (MRT do one)
Im no expert, so would speak to one of the tuners mentioned to confirm.

no worries with the hot air mate - me and me mate have made a galv seperating box that seperates and covers the induction kit from the engine heat and have run a cold air pipe up through the wing seems to work well too!
tim
looks like i might be speaking to andy f then!
edit to say - thanks for the quick advice guys!

TD06 isn't recommended for an EJ20 - It is more suited to the 2.2 and the 2.5 block.
The TD05 variants are recommended for the 2 litre like the TD05-20G which uses the TD05's core and hot side
The standard TD05-16G which you have fitted is capable of 350hp+ with appropriate complementing mods
Cheers
