Default Urgent? Bird-Tweeting noise from engine bay...

hi all,

really not sure about this one, but the scoob has developed a weird noise over the past few days, which I can only describe as a bird tweeting under the bonnet...

Weird I know, it sounds dead regular along with the burble at idle, and it obviously rises with revs - any suggestions??? At idle it's doing the regular kind-of 5-8 tweets per second.

I know this sounds VERY weird, but my paraniod head tells me a belt is about to go. Ok, Ok, I suppose something needs lube-ing more likely but I have no idea!!!

thanks all

dave

ps. and yes, I have checked the scoop for birds!

I'm no expert, but it could be the DV leaking. Check it's securely fitted and the pipes are all well connected. Beyond that

Belt? Or alternator/Pas bearings?

Worst-case it could be a dry cambelt idler bearing

Does it get worse when you turn the steering wheel or turn on your headlamps? or when you turn on the a/c?

thanks for the suggestions guys... to be honest it does sound belt related. Although wouldn't have much of a clue on the DV side of things!?

Without sounding like a divvy, what's the belt at the very front do, the one that's not covered?

I'll see if I can get a better idea of the location tomorrow, and check to see if everything is tense/tight

Idler pulleys..there's 3 of them behind the plastic cambelt cover. Usually they are checked when the cambelt is changed, and chnaged if needed at extra cost - the bearings inside are sealed, but they do dry out and can get rough/noisy. If ignored it will eventually seize and break the cambelt which is not good. Chances that it's this is quite remote, but it is possible.

More likely the anciallary belt (one at the front that's not covered). If the noise get worse if you start turning the wheel, or put your full beam on -chances are it's that.

If you have air-conditioning, that is run by another belt...if the noise gets worse when turning on the a/c. Then the problem is with that.

quick update guys...

right then, in typical Scooby style the noise has completely disappeared this morning!!! <homer simpson> stoopid car <homer simpson>

this must be down to one of two things, either 1) the bit of wd40 applied to the area last night OR 2)only appears on warm engine...

Here's hoping it's 1) !!!

thanks loads for the replies guys, very much appreciated!!!

dave

I've got a similar 'squeak'

it's driving me bloody mad...i'm not even enjoying the car at the moment cos of it. Car has been to dealer 3 times...twice it came back, was fine for 3 days and then started again.

3rd time they replaced a pulley I believe (all under warranty and without any hassle) - though they initially said it was a belt needed replacing.

But it's come back AGAIN! Car is in for rear spoiler next week so going to have another word.

Normally only hear it when the car is warm.

Birds don't normally nest until Spring but the warmth of the engine bay may have them confused. The tell tale signs are straw and twigs under the bonnet.

I think I have the entire population of Northern hemisphere sparrows nesting under my bonnet.

maybe I keep getting more sucked in through the scoop ?

Just to update, All birds have now been removed from engine bay.

While they were at it, they also changed the power-steering belt.
