severe knocklink activity... please help
Ok, after installing my knocklink on friday in my P1 I have been having severe sparklyness on my display
I thought ok lets try a different shell garage (I always use optimax anyway) and tried octane booster, checked intercooler for bent fins etc.. but still nothing stops it from sparkling (I get the big red!).
Anyone know what else I should do to try and stop this from happening?
Sorry if this has been asked countless times but my internet connecton is being very internittent and keeps cutting me off half way through searching.
Thanks

hi mate,
how old are your spark plugs? do you know what they are? at my last service the garage fitted PRF6B's when PRF7B's would of been preferable (V6 type r running 1.4 bar boost)
do you have a boost gauge? on my old standard MY00 something went wrong somewhere and it decided to hit over 1.4 bar (standard around 1 bar), it didn't fuel cut. i didn't have a knock link in that car but thats surely got det potential.
maf (£80 ish), well documented on MY99/00 cars as a weak spot, but far more at risk with an induction kit especially the the mesh style ones. but still worth considering as pressuming its an original it'll be getting on 5 years old now. try resetting the ecu as this sometimes shows up more symptoms like lumpy / hunting on idle, stalling when coming to a stop.
the standard bov / dump valve, this was the problem when my car was detting but i'm running 1.4 bar boost and as i later found out the standard recircs can leak at or above 1.2 bar. shouldn't be a problem on yours but ya never know.
good luck

In your opinion Andy, would a standard sti 4 (except for the blitz cat back) which hasn't had a re-map, be showing ambers and reds on the knock link. The lights are progressive with red appearing at 7500rpm. Had the car just over a year, had the knock-link bout a month. When I first got the car, took it to PE as it had a rough idle. Whilst on the RR, they discovered that the lamda was f%cked. Replaced it and said it was A ok. Think i'll be ordering a afm first thing 2moro morning!!

The MAFs are more robust on the pre 99 cars and tend to fail completely rather than just drift off to a dangerously lean/advanced setting like they do on the 99/00, Sti5&6 & P1
It is likely that a Sti 4 with a full decat will boost creep at higher rpm, this can cause problems if the fueling isn't up to the job. Although yours retaining the DP cat shouldn't be having this issue. Also, unless you run with octane booster the ECU is not guaranteed to be giving the correct ignition advance, this could also cause the knocklink activity.
Only way to be sure is to get someone to listen with a set of det cans and check your Air/Fuel mix with a wideband sensor.
