Question Engine Damage ??

As i do nearly 100 miles a day i usually keep a good check on me oil/fluid levels. Anyway been busy for the last 2 weeks, not checked.

Checked today to find no oil on the stick, when i get under the car, i find that the oil filter has come loose and oil has been pi55ing out.

Car is running fine - but a bit worried as to any damage that might have occured since the oil level has dropped (as i could have done over 2k on only 1.5l of oil)

Is there anything i need to be on the lookout for??

As i say running fine, sounds good, just abit worried.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, BaldyMan.

Not good by any means

Without an engine strip down I'm afarid your never really going to know if any damage has happened to the bearings through oil starvation or air being sucked up instead. You could check the hot oil pressure, and see how it compares to specs, otherwise not much else you can do except listen out for any knocking.

You maybe able to count yourself lucky. Impreza engines really do not take kindly to oil starvation - so keep an ear out for a knocking big end.

I think this common for the Imprezas. My last 2 oil changes were due to the fact i had oil pi55ing out the botom!! I kept thinking it was a gasket away or a new sump needed!!! But no. Lose oil filter both times. Had the same worries the first times but nothing has showed up untill recently when it seems to missfire under boost!!! Not all the time tho. Runs like a dream driving it normaly tho???

I think the minute you start to do anything to your car you should pencil in a spare £1000 for a recon'd engine from API...... Just in case.

All in all a small price to pay if things go wrong.

No one ever said it was going to be easy.......

Baldyman, How much oil did you put in to get it back on the mark??

It is a fact that Subaru oil filters do unscrew themselves unless you wring their necks when doing them up. Fortunately the sump is deep and the dipstick is short and usually a litre will overfill it from nothing showing at all.

So you should still have had at least 3 litres in it, which isn't ideal, but not terrible. I suspect that long term there will have been little damage done - just a fright to you. But that does depend upon how much you put in once you realised.

Good luck David APi Engines / APi lmpreza
