Default Price for new starter? Or can they be refurbished?

My starter is playing up.

I.E. Not disengaging straight away when the engine fires up. Also occasionally the alarm bleeps when you start to crank the engine. Think this is because the starter is drawing too many amps and the alarm thinks the powers been cut.

So anyone know how much for a new one and a good place to get it from or for much cheapness can I strip the thing and repair it in some way?

It's fitted to an MY99 Standard Uk Turbo (The best year impreza in the world - Probably)

how can you tell if the starter is broken or on its way out ?

apart from the obvious your car wont start !

I have been getting a slight vibration off the clutch pedal say when I approach a junction and slip the car into first, I can feel a vibration on the pedal if I dip it. Wait a second or so after stopping before dipping it and its fine.

Could the started be causing this ?

It's prob a daft question....

Q1, my scoob was not turning over very fast, so I changed the battery but it stayed the same so it had to be the starter

Q2, Nope

Not always the case there are a few wiring issues that could cause this

ie.High ressistance on starter live or earth path

Often starters are replaced when there not needed and the cars are fixed!this is because replacing the starter creates a new earth to the gearbox and the onto the earth lead.It never hurts to add an earth lead direct from battery to one of the starter bolts to ensure a good earth.

Thanks TT ive had a look at mine and there is already a direct cable between starter and battery. So do you think Im right in thinking it really is the starter in my case?
