strange noises worrying me
my my99 uk scoob is doing some strange things, maybe its new car paranoia (i been driving it for 2 days LOL)
ok firstly the back pads are quite low, they making a noise when braking a light scraping they need changing, whats the best pad to go for , best prices where to get from, is changing the brakes on a impreza anything different to any car, is there anything i should know?
secondly on the mway last night and the abs light comes on, i thought odd to be honest, went and got some fuel and when i started it up the light went out, its only when i booted it again the light came on hmmm
now this morning took it for a drive and the light has not been on once today, but 8/10 when pulling away from stand still theres a thud from either rear mainly
nearside rear occasionally offside (incidently the nearside pad look more worn than the offside). could this be the wheels binding and the abs going off as it has that abs thud noise. or is the norm when pads are low, sorry if that sounds daft but i am a newbie to imprezas
btw awesome car

I would check out the hand brake mechanism.
The rear ABS sensor is inside the rear hand brake drum. Which looks like the wheel hub on the rear. Take the wheel off and loosen the handbrake from inside the car. To do this remove part of the centre console around the handbrake. This is easy, open the armrest and undo the screw it then lifts off and you will see the adjuster.
Also and very important on the rear drums you must adjust the shoes away from the drums. If you look on the inside toward the top of the drum you will see a rubber bung. Remove this and then get a flat screwdriver and stick it through the hole, there is an adjuster on the other side this needs to be loosened by flipping it one way or the other several times (can't remember which but you should be able to work it out). The drum should then be easy to remove. If it isn't don't force it but work on the adjuster again.
Once you've got the drum off look toward the front of the brake mechanism you will see what looks like a steel pencil about an inch long. This is the ABS sensor. If it is bent or damaged then it will need replacing. This is a pain in **** job as the cable goes along the swinging arm and into the interior before plugging in.
I hope this helps and makes sense if you have doubts about doing this then best bet is to put it into the garage to get checked out. If you don't loosen everything off before removing the drum you could damage the whole handbrake mechanism. Speak from experience!!

Yes your car does have drums (of a sort) the h/brake shoes are inside what appears to be plain ordinary discs.
Best to remove the discs and give them a good clean out. Then have a look for the ABS part
I only found out by looking !!!

Might be one on ozzy's site not sure, but it really is easy. if you go for the DS pads ask alyn for the bedding in procedure. (do a search for a link for AS performance details)
