Unhappy white smoke!!!

I have a 93 wrx. Last week on my way to work there was white smoke coming from the engine, pulled over and it seemed to be coming from under the air filter and smelt like tar (like a new road being laid). Have put car off road so as not to do any further damage, have a feeling it might be power steering fluid causing the problem as the rack was leaking. Any ideas before I spend all my christmas money in the garage!!!

Thanks,
Barry.

Sounds like your rocker cover gasket is leaking onto the exhaust. Common prob.

Cheers red.

checked car today took it for a drive and could hear pump motor type sound and steering got really heavy, topped up power steering fluid and it was fine so it seems I may have a leak somewhere. Where though I don't know. Rocker cover def seems fine though.
Thanks
Barry.

I think the power steering pipes run up the wing under the air filter. You may have a pin hole in one of them, causing the fluid to shoot out under pressure ?
