Question Knocklink

Looking for some advice from you guys out there, I've been told by people if I'm looking to do engine work on my96 sti I should invest in a knocklink.

Now this may sound like a stupid question and I've already done a search on "knocklinks" but can someone tell me what it does? what the advantages are and how does it work? also is it with investing in one or is that just a really stupid question.

cheers for any advice in advance.

A.

did you search thoroughly?

read this - http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/PICS/detonation/detonation.html

a knocklink is a monitor connected to a microphone that is designed to detect engine noise at certain frequencies that indicate detonation in your engine.

basically a warning that something isn't right e.g. poor quality fuel and that you should a) back off if you're thrashing it and b) drive more gently until you can investigate what could be causing a problem
