Will not tick over from Cold starting
Any one seen this problem.
Sometimes the car will not tick over from Cold starting. It fires up, but will not tick over. At the same time this is all happening both the radiator fans come on and about the 5 start up attempt it will just about tick over but if I apply any throttle it will die. Then all of a sudden the revs pick up to where they are supposed to (around 1500 rpm) and then the car is fine. When engine is warm I don't get this problem.
I have tried looking for threads on here but not much available apart from a thread linking this kind of problem to a coolant temp sensor. I guess this seems feasable as the fans kick in.
appreciate any comments.
Mark.

Yep, coolant temp sensor - engine can be almost impossible to start when it is dead!
Sensor for my car (MY93) was around £30 from Subaru, and diy fitment, although fiddly, is possible. On my my car at least, the sensor is located under the inlet manifold on the top of the engine - just about accessable after removing the tubing between the turbo and intercooler!

Yup as above... it is located underneath the inlet manifold facing backwards on the water cross pipe.
If you remove the alternator you will get a better view of where the spanner goes rather than just looking downwards.
Also drain the coolant before doing, will help the new sensor seal properly and asve saoking teh engine in coolant.
Rob
IIRC it is a 17mm sensor.

Thanks Rob.
Bet I am going to have a problem ordering from Subaru as they won't even sell me a oil filter...
Do you know what colour the wires are so I can be sure I am lookig at the right sensor or will it be obvious, ie no more sensors around that area.

ok... there are twpo sensors in that area
Both water temp sensors, one single wire and one twin wire.
The twin wire one is used for the Ecu (one you need) and the other for the temp gauge on the dash. One is a brass sensor (single wire) the other is a brown plastic and brass sensor (twin wire)

You want the twin wire sensor as said above.

Hi Mark , hope your well ?
Was checking the threads for this sort of thing as
mine does the same thing , but i get the check engine light. When I read the ECU blips , it gives me 21 - coolant sensor .It's quite intermittent but will always occur on a morning when I am running late for work . Removing the battery for 5 mins cures it and then it's alright for 5-600 miles.
How did you get on changing the sensor? (thought Subaru were now supporting imports?)
