cam sensor location??

cam sensor location??
has anyone got a pic of the location of the cam position sensor on the bugeye?it's a my01,i don't know if there is two sensors or one but its the bank 'a' sensor i wanted to locate as i keep getting the occasional obd light when thrashing it and the fault code leads to this.

no,the car is standard apart from a itg filter and prodrive exhaust+springs,i know there is alot of early wrx's suffering this fault but if it was software why has it only just started doing it??i was gonna try cleaning up the sensor see if that made any difference.

Actually its probably the cam sensor to trigger pad clearance thats out, higher revs would then show up a "miss" as there wouldn't be a clear signal from the sensor leading to the ecu not knowing which cylinder to fire, not software related unless you are referring to the error rejection filters that exist within it. Too much noise and the ecu will flag a problem genuinely. Its a proximity sensor, cleaning does nothing at all, moving sensor closser to trigger pads will, if there is enough gap. Don't let it hit and dopn't start the engine without it being securely fixed in place.

i understand what your saying but i would have though there would be nothing to adjust on it?? i believe it is a sealed unit, unless i was to take the sensor off and if its the proximity of the sensor then just wet and dry the contact point the sensor fits to and try it then????

Was posting on Power Engineerings advice, when over there they said that the bugeye Ecu's were problematic with common Cam sensor CEL's. They were looking for a 'Fix' to put in the Ecutec Software IIRC.
However, this is your field Bob...

Correct, however as always practical experience can help in these areas, I am very familier with the software (read firmware) concerned.
yes its a sealed unit, read my post again, thats what I am saying, nothing to clean or adjust, a proximity sensor is, however, VERY dependant on the PROXIMITY of the trigger pad.
Yours to pay attention to or not, no never mind to me, as always just offering advice based on real experience not theory.
btw the cam sensor is a common part through all model years of the Impreza
cheers, hope you all had a good night, I did !!!

Mark,
I wouldn't wet & dry the sensor to much else you may remove to much of the encapsulation material and may actually wear the sensor head away! I'd just give it a clean with meths or brake cleaner if it's dirty. I've heard that it only occurs on early bug eyes such as yours and mine due to poor earthing and is more likely to be a loom fault than software. Have you checked all the electrical contacts are clean? As stated in another post I had this fixed twice by changing the sensor (under warranty) it's no occurred for over two years now!
Good luck and happy new year
Ian
p.s. Bob sounds like he's been drinking brake cleaner ;-)

It was very good brake cleaner though, to clarify the gap needs to be made smaller, you do that by dressing either the alloy mount on the rocker cover or the sensor mounting face itself, if you over do it you can always shim back, remove the nearside cam cover and then you can shim/fettle and check with feelers. Don't allow the sensor face to be contacted by the trigger pads else. The "encapsulation" is actually part of the magnetic circuit.

My car suffers from this problem an early JDM STI7. Ideally what should the gap be between the sensor face and trigger?
Thanks,
Paul.
