Default Petrol Warning Light

Funnily enough I was going to post a question last week about how many miles are left when the petrol warning light comes on....
Today I found out : 36 miles (plus two miles spluttering)

I hope this helps other people to avoid being stranded.

Some do - my '05 JDM STI definitely has a low fuel light, it's just a simple orange circle. Note also that if you just stick in a few litres rather than filling up, it doesn't go out, even though the fuel gauge itself may be showing (say) 1/4 full.

I found this out when I picked up the car new - the tank was virtually empty and the nearest filling station only had 95 RON - ouch...

All cars have low fuel lights except the MY92-96 ones wether JDM or Eurospec, on the latest MY02 onwards cars the fuel light coming on still leaves you with about 12-14 litres, on a Classic it varies but its typicaly 5-8 litres.

Bob
my MY97 UK didnt have a fuel warning light.
Believe it only fitted on UK from MY98.

Salesgirl told me it did, so i ran it looking for the light until I ran out of petrol. Complained to the garage and told to never let the fuel drop below half way

Plonkers all of them.

Salesgirl told me it did
Brave man, believing a salesgirl...

I tend to get 30 miles, give or take (MY00). And when I forget it's low, it starts to cut out accelerating round corners. The gauge is just below the "E" at this point. And so I forget about it again. Then it starts to cut out in a straight line, and I suddenly remember that saying about hindsight...

Do you just run your car until it stops!

Was going to post a question but found this thread.

Dan (If you are still around), what car are you running and can you remember how many litres it took to fill the tank?

I have a MY99 WRX (ie Import), it does have a fuel warning light contrary to Krade, which tends to come on just fractionally below the E mark on the gauge and earlier this week I ran it for 27 miles with the light on but still only managed to squeeze 55.2 litres into it which suggests I had another 20-25 miles to go on the 60L tank.

For those unfortunates who have run out of fuel or even run exceedingly low, what is the max amount you have been able to get into the tank?

Graham

I was sh@tting myself yesterday after 11 miles of fuel light, so much so that in the end, after seeing no garages for the last 5 miles (note any garages not just Shell) I found a Texaco and had to put in 20 ltrs of 95 ron (+1 bottle of OB).

Then again I was in an unsavory part of a strange city (Salford, Manchester..!) and the thought of running out with wify in the car was having an unwelcome effect on my backside..!

To rub it in 1 mile furthur down the road was the shell garage I'd been looking for, then again their Optimax pumps were empty..!

My new age wrx has 10 litres left when light comes on. So driven gently should be good for around 50-60 miles. Not tried though.

On the Classic you can reckon on 40mls from fuel light on with intelligent driving.
On a standard car it will typically take 52 litres to fill when reading empty.
I have adjusted the pick up on both of my cars and because I know how they will perform it is now possible to run them and put in 57-58 litres. The tank is 60 litres.
