Default slanty intercooler + max boost

Interested to know what boost people are running on the 'older' slanty intercooler cars, and still using standard internals and intercooler.

I have mine set on 14psi at the moment but was running at 17psi before.

Every car's different, so what may run fine on one, may cause det on another. The only way you're gonna know for sure is by either using det cans to set it up, or by using a knocklink...

jay ma, how many miles did you do. Did you push it hard.

I know the cars are different but just want to know people's experiences with different boost levels on the early cars. Seems a lot of people run 18+ psi on the later cars, but not heard much of that on the earlier ones

As Judge, says it varies from car to car and needs to be set up properly monitoring for det, but providing octane booster is used it can be possible to get to 19-20psi quite safely. I've been in a few cars at this level.

as rich says it does vary, boost pressure is not the limiting factor here, its the intercoolers ability to get rid of the heat produced by running more boost pressure.

the slanty intercooler isn't the best at doing this, i fitted an sti v6 intercooler as one of the first mods to my car(my95 wrx, originally had the slanty one on) and found i could raise the boost from 1.0 bar to 1.2 bar on the standard ecu without picking up any det using optimax only.

it would start to get amber lights on the knocklink at 1.1 bar with the slanty intercooler.

a better intercooler is definately worthwhile and will add safety too.

I might upgrade the intercooler. I have had, and will continue to have the car mapped properly for different boost levels. I had it mapped for 17psi, but the map is a little aggresive so I get a bit of det with poorer fuel or if I've been running for a while. I have temporarily dialed it down with a dawes and it's running great at 14-15psi (on optimax).

I have the option to have the map adjusted and wonder whether I should reduce the boost to 15psi at the same time to prolong the engine life.

16.5 was OK for road, I used optimax and 1ml/litre NF, my KL only gave the odd bit of det on sustained 5th gear boost. Over 10k miles with this setup, driven hard when warm / possible to do so

On track I went back to 15psi for safety and used 2ml/litre - again no probs on a hot summers day. Did 4-5 trackdays like this

Then I put a MY99 IC on and ran the 16.5psi map - amazing difrerence 227 WHP but overboosting to 17.5psi and getting fuel cut etc. Tamed it with a Dawes but was still getting hesitation on full boost. Didn't get to the bottom of it as I returned the car back to std and sold it soon after. Did about 1k miles on this setup

Engine wise no probs, I think once boost gets to 17psi levels the coil packs, plugs, earthing etc need to be spot on otherwise hesitation sets in

hth

cheers.
I have an EBC coming and plan to use 14psi normally, 15.5 with booster, and 10 for the wife.

recently ran 1.3bar.. I have a Link ecu and remapped it when I refitted the slanty intercooler.. I had to remove lots of timing to stop knock spikes..

I drove it like a stole it once warmed up.. no problems..

now back on FMIC..
