Hi Peeps

My 95 wagon import arrived today by transporter & for the first time since i bought it 2 weeks ago, I got to look over it & drive it

2 small niggly (hope so) problems appear immediately,

1. After a run, there was smoke from under the bonnet & an oil leak is apparent, I am pretty sure it's from the turbo side rocker cover which from what i read here is a common fault, BUT I can also see a small pool of oil (not much) directly above the crankshaft pulley, on the cambelt covers. Would this have "tracked" itself along from the rocker leak, or is there another known leak centre up there ?? Pretty sure its not the crank seal beacuse the tiny pool is above it & there is nothing whatsoever below ??

2. Minor niggle but if I rev it to 2500 / 3500 revs, theres a tingly rattle, sounds like a loose heatshield or similar but i cant find where its coming from ?? Is this another "known" scooby fault ??

Still, the autobox is brilliant & the best auto i have ever seen as a substitute for a mnaual (other than FTO tiptronics). Power button works, hold button works & it changes as well as my supra

1. I would say is the power steering res leaking down.
2. If the drivers side cover is leaking this often loosens the bolts on the heat shilds causing them to rattle, jack car up and get someoen to rev the car whilst you use something to put pressure on the heatshields until you find the one rattling.

Spose it's possible it could be the turbo, but atm i dont think so, no other funny noises & certainly zero smoke from the exhaust.

The oil on top of the cam cover looks to me as if it's engine oil & not PS fluid, saying that ...... looks too clean for oil out of the engine ! Maybe some muppet spilt some

Hi there, not too sure about the oil leak and difficult to diagnose without seeing it.

The rattle sounds like a loose/fractured heatshield and is quite easy to fix although may require a new heatxhield which from memory is about £ 7.00 + VAT. Try a search on heatshields or rattle from heatshield.

Oil leak, been said unless one see's it difficult to diagnose.
Your rattle however quite likely to be the heat sheilds. It's unfortunate that the shield goes through many temperaure changes. What with the hot engine one minute and then a massive cooling down through rain and puddles etc.
quite an easy mod to carry out to prevent any fractures in the future is to put one or two washers under the heat shield thus keeping it away from the hot engine just that little bit more. Might help. if remember correctly a small write up can be found on the faq on the SIDC forum. I'll have a look for tomorrow and post the link.

Get a decat proper downpipe and forget the heatshields!

Lag the d/pipe first though for best effects.

i found the heatshield rattle tonight, was under the drivers side, little lug broken off -- simple spot weld fix

Oil leak seems to be around the cam cover as most suggestions point, so will replace that & try it out
