Little sensor thing near windscreen????

Little sensor thing near windscreen????
Today I noticed that the little round blackish thing just to the right of the windscreen air vent is not just a screw cover as I had thought, but a small sensor of some sort - looks like a light sensor?
Does anyone know what this is and what it is supposed to do???
