Default Scooby n00by seeking power / brake advice

Hi guys

I have just traded in my BMW 323 coupe for a 2001 WRX.
Everything is standard, out of the box, non-prodrive Subaru.

I have been very impressed with the handling of the car and performance so far, but have a couple of questions that you will be able to help me with.
I am not massively familiar with subaru engines etc as I have been focusing on BMW's for the past 10 years.
I have a budget of around £1600 to spend on it at the moment.

1: Brakes - standard they seem ok but i want better - what brakes would you recommend for starters?

2: Power increases. I assume a K&N kit is a good idea but what about exhaust / manifold type stuff. If you were starting out modding a WRX what would you put on first to get the best bhp per buck?

Thanks in advance.

Get some uprated pads/discs and dot 5 brake fluid, good improvement over standard.£250 Unless you go for a big brake kit ie brembos
Get full decat £500 and a tek 3 remap £600. This should see around 280bhp
Spend the rest on knocklink/gauges to check everthings ok.

1. Try AP 4 pots and setup the suspension geometry accurately. If you buy used and exchange for your original brakes you will have some budget left for...
2. Change the uppipe, downpipe, and rest of the exhaust, sports cat options available as well, and upgrade the intercooler hoses. Remove the resonator from the inner wing, duct cold air to the factory airbox and fit an STi panel filter.

When you have another £1600, fit a VF35 turbo, exhaust manifold, fuel pump, knocklink, boost gauge and remap and you should have about 100 BHP up on standard. Beyond that you are looking at a further £2000 (used) to upgrade the gearbox to a six speed which will take just about all the power and torque most would dream of throwing at a Subaru.

John - What power do you think the STD box will handle on a bugeye wrx

Im looking at stage 2 now, and can't aford a new gear box 2 weeks after a new turbo, injectors and top mount

and one last thing, what makes you say vf35 and not a td05 that every one seems to shout about

cheers

Brakes have to be StopTech, they are awesome, and even TSL say they have more initial bite than his own AP's. And the more important point is they are cheaper than AP's but give you as good as performance.
They are **** hot basically, i love em.

VF35 because it is less likely to break his chocolate gearbox, nothing else. The joys of a TD05 catch up with you sooner or later if you use it like intended

There is a nice second hand market for APs.

As always there are several ways of doing it, most satisfactory

Interesting thread, i didnt know there was a resonator in the inner wing restricting air flow.

What is the best way of extracting this? Take the wing off or can i get at it by going through the wheel arch?

Wheel arch and wheel off. Pretty sure it is still there on the WRX.
