I have a 96 mcrae and over the last few weeks i've had problems with my cel coming on. i took it to a very well respected garage who carried out diagnostics etc and everything appeared fine, however on saturday, after my cel came on again the engine just died leaving me stranded. the guys came out and had a look. when i turned on the ignition i had no cel like i normally would do and when turning the engine over it didn't fire up. they had a look at the fuse box and it appeared one had short circuited and it appeared to be the ignition. they took it away and on tuesday everything seemed normal. they checked the wires etc and nothing was frayed and appeared not to cause the short circuit. on saturday, the put a pair of pliers where the fuse went and boy, did it spark! but tuesday, nothing! they kept it to give it a drive around as they didn't want me to break down in it, they rather if it happened, it happened to them and lo and behold...it broke down!! We are all scratching heads to why this has happened and no one seems to have an idea. i know the car is high milage at 110,000 miles, but while in my possesion i have kept the car in good nick. if anyone has any ideas or suffered this problem please let me know as i'm still without me scoob !
