Performance Panel Filters!!!
i just wondered if you can clean performance panel filters,i have an ITG panel filter on my classic, and i have been told it needs replacing by the dealers that serviced it yesterday, they offered to replace it with a standard one but i told them to leave it and ill replace it myself with another performance one.

ITG's have a history of causing MAF failure due to them being very oily. It might be worth considering a different brand rather than cleaning it, which can be done using a kit which usually has a solvent cleaner and some fresh light oil for reapplying. I'd recommend changing to a JR Racing, K&N or Green if you want a lifetime filter,or alternatively many people are raving about the paper replaceable STi filter (group buy, might be finished though ?).

They are good. When you change it, have a look at the MAF sensor and in your airbox, see how much crap is on there from the ITG
GENTLY clean it off the sensor with a cotton bud. Very gently.
Also worth doing an ECU reset and see if it has damaged the MAF sensor.

No do it yourself, its easy and good learning
The airbox is on the left hand side bottom corner of the engine bay as you look at it with the bonnet up. You will have to un-do the connections to it (jubilee clips) and unbolt it from the car, then just lift the lid off and replace filter. The MAF sensor lives on a cylindrical tube on the outlet of the filter box, and is bolted on. Probably has an orange sticker on it? Just have a look at the sensor inside and see if its gunked up. If not, best to leave it. http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/m.../maint.html#11 click on air filter for info.
See here: http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....htm#_Dyno_Runs To reset the ECU after. Very easy, just find the plugs under the dash and connect them up.
If your idle goes a bit lively after the reset, dont panic, you've probably just uncovered a fualty o2 or MAF sensor. Post back if this happens.

Well, long term a failed MAF can cause lean running and ultimately engine failure. Not to scare you too much, but its quite common to see these fail on MY99/00 cars.
A damaged o2 sensor will just mean the car runs rich off boost, and will waste fuel. Think youd have to run with a dead one for a long time to suffer bore wash
Easy enough to replace though.

nice one mark,
hopefully mine is ok being a MY98,ive just taken the air filter out and inspected what i think is the MAF sensor,if im right it seems to look clean so i havent touched it,ive taken some pics if you could confirm im looking at the right bit i'd appriciate it.
im not sure what colour the filter is supposed to be,but if its black then it doesn't seem to be overly gunked up, but there is some crap on it in places.

Yep thats pretty gunked up, new one should have it breathing a bit more freely
MAF is best left alone if it hasn't got any bits stuck to it

ive got a unifilter in a MY95.
I washed it with turps and reoiled it with foam filter solution.
You pour some on to the now clean foam and squeeze the excess off.
The solution goes tacky with contact to air and it stays on the filter.
Job done.
