Default "cool" starting bug...

Starting from cold, my 00MY uk turbo fires up almost instantly and the same goes for normal operating temps. But, when the engine's been allowed to cool down a bit, ie anything more than about 20 to 30 minutes, it takes 4 or 5 seconds for the engine to catch when starting up. This started about last November/December, when the clutch was changed under warranty by the local main dealer.

Since then, I've had a routine and major 60K service, changed spark plugs twice (or rather, had them changed by a pro ), fitted a de-cat d/pipe and new b/box (again a pro job), replaced the old ITG air filter with an STi one and done two or three ecu resets (did the filter and resets myself, I'm pleased to say ). None have had any effect. CEL codes following the resets have indicated that all seems to be ok. No visible contamination on the MAF sensor, either.

I only use Shell Optimax and other than this minor irritation, the car runs perfectly.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Kev

Are you touching the throttle whilst cranking?

Otherwise possibly a weak signal from a duff crank position sensor.

I can't think of anything else at this time of night

No - not touching the throttle at all.

Would the crank position sensor be affected by engine temps?

(edited to add - I know it's late. I have two weeks off work and I'm making the most of it )

Yes, it does sometimes happen. Not sure why, it just does.
