Default Difference between sti version 3 and sti version 4 engine

Could someone tell me the real differences between the two since many people tell me that the version 4 is the best sti engine built but on the other hand i get people telling me that the version 3 is better. Also what is the difference between a type r sti version 4 and a standard sti version 4

very much appreciate the info guys

Difference between the Type R and the standard STi is quite easy
The type R has no ABS, it has the Drivers Controlled Center Diff (DCCD) by the handbrake, this adjusts (manually) the power front/rear. Also the standard STi is a 4 or 5 door shell, the type R is a 2 door shell. So, standard has abs but no dccd.
V3 v V4....
Its commonly said that the v3 has a closed deck block (stronger) but the 4 doesnt have this, the 4 is reknown for being possably the quickest out of the box car, but like any car, you get good and bad....
You want to have a look at www.sidc.co.uk there should be some info on there and some links to other sites (hopefully) with info available.

You want to speak to API (David), personally the v3 engine has the advantage due to it being close deck, the v4 engine has the advantage of evolution.
If you were building from scratch then id go for a V3 but thats just my opinion.

The last of the closed deck blocks were on the v2, the v3 and v4 have open deck blocks, and are basically the same apart from changes to the turbo and valve timing etc.

Version 3 and version 4 engines are the same internally. Neither comes originally with a closed deck block. There might be some fiddly stuff changed on the timing tensioning but nothing that either matters or makes a difference. BHP is the same on both.

My STI3 VLimited came with pretty wild cams from the factory. The STI 4 cams I have seen are not as lairy, however, mine might have been a parts bin special.

The STI3 came with a VF23 turbo, the STI 4 has the VF24. The VF23 can flow more air. They used the VF23 on the 22b as well.

All the STI 3 engines I have seen have had open deck blocks.

Yep, when API opened my Sti V3 to do the head gaskets the block was open. API use Sti v4 head gaskets (I think i remember that right David?).
Don't understand the choc flavout to the discussion, melt they will i guess if ill-managed?
So would my Porsche and so has my friends Cossie.

Having abused my Sti hill climbing for nearly 3 seasons, the car must be made of high melting point choc....still all there, or maybe it was the V3 gaskets that are choc?
