Default when do you need a new lambda sensor?

obviously when it's fooked, but how do you tell? what does you car do when it's failed/failing?

just asking coz i've got to change my maf and would like to know if it's worth doing this aswell.

Crap fuel economy (worse than usual that is), hesitation and poor running off boost.

When they're totally fooked, sometimes after a spirited drive the rev's can leap about all over the place similar to that of a failed MAF.

Edited to add: They're as cheap as chips from Cats Direct, if you even suspect that it needs changing then at £35 it's well worth doing.

just to let you know that my front lambda has failed & the universal one (4 Wire) dosnt work on my car (MY01)

looks like if I cant get one from a scrapper then its main stealer prices

symptoms were very bad idleing, very bad fuel economy but on boost it was fine

Phil (still searching for one)

cheers again mate like having my own online mechanic today (heatshield is all sorted now, thanks for your help )

as for the lambda, what no. wire one do i need and is this easy to fit? i mean is there any wiring to do, cutting into existing wires and stuff?

if i can get one,the mafs going on tomorrow so i'll see how the car runs with just that for a start, all problems seem maf related so hopefully that'll be all i need.

You're welcome.

The 3 wire lambda is a direct replacement.

The 4 wire sensor comes with an extra wire so that you can ground it to the chassis of the car, otherwise they are grounded through their mounting into the DP.

You have to cut the connector off the existing Lambda, the new sensor comes with crimp on connectors to enable you to connect it to the old connector, it's a simple enough job.

Works perfectly on a MY94 STi Marky. You have to snip the wire to the loom and connect the three wires, black red and white, with the crimps, the wires are stainless steel so won't solder.

You have to remove the exhaust heat shield where the sensor screws into the manifold, and the socket is the same size as the old 18 mm sparking plugs, like the old motor mower ones.

hi does anyone know which type of sensor goes on my 97 wrx its the one on top of the downpipe.
also is a sign of the lambda sensor going when the car slightly idles a bit high and when your giving it some the power comes in surges and crapy economy, i mean from £35 optimax and millers about 145-150 miles. Or am i barking up the wrong tree and its the maf thats fo*ked

Yeah, the MAF wont give any bad MPG effects. A bad lambda can be worth up to 40 miles less per tank

If you work it out, you probably gain more in MPG by changing it every 18 months.

I used to condemn the Halfords ones, but they are actually ok from what I can work out. Unfortunately they dont sell them anymore, but there's an online shop called cats direct which sells them. They are very generic, but look for the 3 wire zirconia sensor on their site. Think they only sell 4 types.

I had one on my STi4.
