Default 94 STI

Hi all I'm new to the site, I just bought a 94 sti on friday. I'm having a problem with it at the moment. I just want to see what you guys think. when the car hits about 4500 rpm its like as if the car is running out of petrol. for a few sec then its it take off again it just happens when the car is betwen 4500 and 5500 rpm.. could it be the fuel filter.. the car was sitting up 2years before I bought it,

sounds like overboost.. try cleaning the boost solenoid..

spray brake cleaner into it.. hopefully someone else can post a picture for you to locate it.

Either that or you are running it on unleaded only rather than super unleaded + booster??

you should be running SUPER unleaded as a minimum.. Shell Optimax is the best and you might well need to put booster in it.. Jap fuel is 100RON uk normal unleaded is 95RON and Optimax 98RON.. you will kill the engine with it detting otherwise.

between 4500 and 5500rpm is a particularly sensitive place for det to occur..

Even if the car was sitting for 2 years it should have been serviced, if not you dont know what has deteriorated
Did you buy the car from a trader or a private owner??
If it was from a private owner and they recommended unleaded fuel you dont know what sort of damage it could have done to the engine
You need to get the car serviced ASAP, there are alot of speciallists around, cambelt should be a priority if the car has been standing for 2 years and not serviced. You also need to invest in a Knocklink and sensor, available from here>> www.jap-innovations.co.uk

Depends?
If it sounds like someone blowing over a milk bottle type whistle then it could well be the wastegate, have a look here> www.sidc.co.uk and look under faq's, there use to be some known problems with certain years of cars, i dont think it was for a 94 car but it can still happen.
Still best to get the car serviced and see what they can find from that

Using the wrong fuel won't make it cut out like that.

BUT use the right fuel anyway.

Where are you, take it to someone who can fix it properly, you may get some good advice on here but you may also get total crap!!

Could be lots of things.

loud screech could be a lot of stuff, from turbo bearing (likely to cause blue smoke) to a hole in the exhaust under the heatsheild. More information is needed, please?

And the wrong fuel CAN make the car hesitate, as the ECU will detect detonation and pull timing.

You can take that back after two people here have just proved the opposite!

The ECU will detect the det and retard timing and if you are luck as they were cut the boost etc.. and make you noticed something is wrong.

Very glad the fuel change solved that problem.

It is vital that you use SUL on this car and preferably Optimax. That rev range is the most susceptible to detonation and the damage being done to your engine is enormous.

My MY94 STi is quite happy on Optimax running 16 psi boost without booster, but I would not run it on any lesser petrol. I do have a Knocklink fitted.

It is a superb car all round, you are lucky to have one. Well worth taking good care of it. Check with Marky San on the register for early Sti's.

Good point: would STRONGLY reccomend a Knocklink to any STI drivers out there.#

The screech really could be anything, mate.
It COULD be something as simple as a vibrating heatsheild, or a crack in the exhaust whistling (exhaust is covered in metal heat-sheilds, so can sound awful if it leaks).

I very much doubt it's the turbo, as that would not be RPM specific, but tend far more to make the noise at a prescribed boost level / engine load.

As it's RPM related, and comes and goes, I can't help but think this is something vibrating / resonating. My first reaction is to tell you to lift the bonnet and look to the left of your intercooler at the gearbox oil dipstick. Is this resting against the intercooler / bodywork of the car / turbo heatsheild or anything else? It shouldn't be! These can sound awful if they start vibrating against anything.

Sounds like the dump valve has a leak.. you need a stronger spring in it..

Either refit the standard one of fit a stronger spring..
