Default What turbo is fiited to an MY98 WRX?

Just need to know what is fitted so that I can plan for future mods. What size up-pipe will produce the ealiest spool up when used with ported headers?

Cheers for any info

UK or Import?

Saloon or Wagon??

STI or normal model?

Look at the turbo, maybe on the collar, to see the turbo type? Works on TD04's I seen ... If a saloon likely a TD05, unless a STi then a VF series turbo IIRC??

Then again, I could be talking sphericals...

I'm pretty sure now that the one I have fitted is the VF29. What I need to know is how large is the opening that the up-pipe mounts to in order to decide if my 2.5" up-pipe is too large. I am thinking that a smaller dia up-pipe will give earlier spool and full boost.

the answer is still VF29, which isn't what is fitted to the (v4 in 98) Sti, which was a VF24.

VF24, 28 and 29 essentially the same. VF23 same but with larger p20 ex housing, VF22 has both p20 ex housing and a larger compressor wheel.

Ok, so now we know its a VF29, can anyone answer these questions.

I have a 2.5" up-pipe (Zerosports) coming from standard, but ported headers. Will this pipe taper to fit the turbo exhaust inlet correctly or will there be a restrictive lip? And if it is too large could I port the turbo to aid spool up?

Would a smaller up-pipe make it come on boost earlier? I currently get during cold/damp conditions full (1.21 bar) boost at around 3600rpm ish.

Is this right?

Spec is

MY98 WRX saloon
Zerosports ECU, Up-pipe, induction kit with K&N, 3" Downpipe and a 2.5" straight through Magnex system.

Pavlo,

I have a ZeroSports badge on the turbo, so it looks like its a hybrid of some sort? unless they replace it and just add a badge to show its one of theirs.

Any ideas on my questions above

Exclamation

According to japanese performance project WRX which was a MY98 5dr WRX it had a TD04 fitted just the same as a UK MY98. Also Read this link from Scooby tuner which is a US site. Which states that a TD05 was used up until 1997 when it was replaced by a TD04 on the WRX.

The MY98 STi V4 has a VF24 fitted cos thats what my turbo came out of.

So I would say it was a TD04 in your car which would max out around 280BHP

No idea on up pipe though !

Cheers

Neal (UK MY98 now with VF24 fitted for ***** and giggles)

The MY98 JDM WRX 280 ps car is fitted with a VF22, larger turbo at slightly less than STi boost to get the 280 ps. The VF29 was not fitted to that model year as "std".

VF24 on MY98 STi and VF23 on MY97 STi.

Thats the saloon, the 5 doors were "wierd" and had a different turbo to the saloon and a higher compression engine. (9.0 to 1)
