There are various solutions you can do a search on.

Unichip
Apexi Power FC
Link
Gems
Motec

Bound to be others, but as I'm in the same position of needing to re-map a 98 car then these are the ones I've looked at.

Depends what your budget is (range above goes from about £700 for Unichip to about £3500 for a Motec depending on specs/mapper) and where you are in the country as to which will be best for you.

Dave.

Thumbs up

If you have a UK car give Power Engineering a bell. They do an EcuTek stylie Phase 2 remap of the 97-98 ECU. Mine is now running over 300BHP with help from them.

I ran a group buy at Xmas and about 10x 97-98 had the remap done, most saw 280 BHP and 280 LBF after the remap with just zaust and filter upgrades.

Cheers

Like Me

At the time - 98UK turbo, full TSL decat, panel filter, samco hoses, Standard I/C with tilt kit - Remap at PE, courtesy of Neal's GB, 281BHP and 262 lbs/feet torque...

Only issue worth bearing in mind is if you do more mods - I've fitted a hybrid FMIC and 57i - about to add 255 pump and regulator, then hoping to go bigger injectors and TD05 - the further Remap is around an extra 600 quid... (!)

Not sure if this would be cheaper for any of the other alternates....

I was going to go the PE route on my MY97, in the end I decided on a Power FC which was mapped by Andy F. The main reason for pulling out of the PE group buy was because I had further mods planned, I now have the following:

VF34 Turbo
Hybrid FMIC
550cc Injectors
Apexi Power FC mapped by Andy F
Greddy Profec e-01 boost controller at 1.4bar
Walbro fuel pump
FSE Fuel pressure Reg
2.5" Full decat
D R Motorsport 'GT Spec II' headers
Forge VTA dumpvalve (I know, I know)
K&N Induction Kit

Yes I'm still on the original 'box. I don't know how much power I'm running as I haven't had it dyno'd since having that lot fitted, but the VF34 is the limiting factor. I'd guess it is somewhere around the 330-340bhp area.

My original Subaru headers are rusting at the bottom of a scrapheap somewhere.........

Up untill last week I had some Tony Law mild steel equal length headers on the car, but the joins kept seperating under load and leaking. The headers from D R Motorsport are great quality, and a fantastic price, £450 including up-pipe.

hmm - but I can't really justify buying another up-pipe, after having a new one fitted two weeks ago !

PS - Drexel - did you get the problem with your VF34 fixed - it was acting up after your mapping with andy f ?

Well, it's better, but not perfect. Alot of the slow spool was being caused by the headers leaking, since fitting the D R motorsport headers I'm getting 1bar at 3600 and full boost at 4000. So still not amazing spool-up, but alot better than it was (no boost untill 4.5k+)

I think the VF34 is just not happy running with free flowing headers. I'm seriously considering getting a TD05/06 -20g and running it at around 1.2bar, that would still give me about 340bhp, with loads more potential if I replace my gearbox with something stronger.

Sounds a bit better - Any disadvantages to the TD05 ? (Other than trying to get hold of one ? - Oh, and the fact that you already have the 34...)

Think I'll be putting my 'big turbo' plans on hold - probably try to get an FC fitted by AndyF first - not sure at this point if I need the boost controller 'add-on', but I can't afford to keep having the PE system re-mapped - I make too many mods, too often for that.... (Hybrid FMIC and 57i seemed to have upset it a bit...)

ScoobyGuy22 - worth keeping this in mind - if you're going for one remap and not altering much after that, or if your car is constantly in flux....

Cheers,

Mark

I originally went for the VF34 over a TD05FE because it spools better and it's good for around 350bhp. As it stands though I would get better spool up with an '05 based turbo, as they are proven to work well with headers. As you pointed out though, it's getting hold of the things.............

changing the modifications on your car then getting mapped again isnt too bad with the power fc but with ecutek had my ecu done with ecutek 3 times the cheapest ive ever paid to get mapped was £300.

pleased i got rid of my tek3 map as ill be on my 2nd apexi map shortly

Chaps - are you Power FC fans running AVC boost controllers or the like >

I'm seriously considering moving from the dark side and having one done by AndyF, but I'm not sure about the boost controller side - Although the Power FC will stablise my car again, I'd like to see something more for my trouble, and I suspect a 'selective boost/gear' might be the trick....

As usual, I'm a bit concerned about making the inside of the car a bit 'disco', but I'm sure I can discreetly cover/hide it....

What would your recommendations be ?

Ta,

Mark

Sounds good - Just need to
Replace D/V -> manifold hose for a proper one of the correct size
Make sure exhaust is not leaking due to up-pipe replacement
Fit new pump and regulator
And off we go.....

oh - and I suppose I ought to wash it (20 BHP there...)

Mark

PS _ How does the 'deal' work - do you order the two parts (Power FC and AVC-R) from AndyF, fit them and then drive up ? (With some form of default map ?)

You can either come up and I'll fit both here, or I can load a safe map on to the ECU then post it to you to allow you to fit it down there, then drive up. Or I can come to you to fit/map at additional cost.

Mark, I'm running a Greddy Profec e-01 boost controller. It basically does everything the AVCR does, but looks more tarty

Yes I know, gadget city I also have a knocklink on the right-hand side of the steering wheel.

I ordered my Power FC from Greenline in Japan, £450 delievered and no import duty. I then sent it to Andy and he tweaked the base map for my 550cc injectors and sent it back to me so I wouldn't use silly amounts of fuel on the journy up to him. It then transpired that Andy was mapping someone elses car fairly close to me so we both gave him extra £££££'s and he flew down and mapped our cars. Fitting the Power FC is dead easy, but you need to swap some wires over.

Andy, how long would it take to map or fit and map ? I assume fitting would be additional cost here or at 'your place'..

I've a little to do before I make the decision, both in terms of work on the car (see prev post) and in terms of backtracking with the PE decision at home (If you know what I mean...)

Could you please let me know the costs of Power FC, AVC-R, and fitting (though I don't mind doing this myself if its not too bad) - PM / mail me if you prefer....(I've already PM more questions to you (sorry!))

Thanks,

Mark

I PM'd a reply to you earlier today with those costs ? have you checked ?

Power FC fitting and mapping is 3-4 hours. AVC-R takes an hour or two to fit then it is mapped along with the Power FC, typically adding another hour to the job.

yesterdays PM and note that it included fitting - Bargain !

Only price I'm missing is AVC-R... err - which you just sent - Thanks

What sort of booking / delivery time is on these items ?
Oh - and did you get my PM regarding airports...

Cheers,

Mark

The 97/98 ECU's are in short supply just now (wonder why ) so it will be around 4/5 weeks before I can get get them at the quoted prices. Next week is possible but it would be approx £50 more expensive.

I can Email you a list of available dates if you tell me approx when you are progressing it.
