Default Dremel or Die Grinder advice needed before porting headers

Hey up peeps,

Got my porting project ready to roll but need to buy a tool to do the job.

From my early days of flowing pinto heads I still have my high speed grinding bit but my die grinder is fooked. I have been to have a look at some electric dremel type tools but they all seem to have 3mm chuck sizes and even the air version have this size.

The problem I have is that my grinding bit has a 6mm shank and I dont fancy spending a week with the electric drill!!

What have you guys used and from where?

Cheers in advance.

HSS? Interesting stuff. As I probably wont use it again, it may be the way to go.

micared, what die grinder did you use and do you know the shank size of the carbide cutter?

Cheers fellas!!

A Bosch 500W 1/4" router for about £60 makes a very effective die grinder for where you don't need a lot of reach - such as headers. And you can use it to knock-up a sideboard afterwards. You need a big compressor to keep an air driven grinder running.

As micared says tungsten carbide burrs (around £20) are the way to go. Stones take forever.

Ok, your going to love this.

I went to machinemart in Sheffield this morning to find out if they had an air die grinder that would accept a 6mm shank. The snotty manager pipes up while I'm talking to an assistant that the clark die grinder on display will not accept anything bigger than a 3mm shank. Off I trots home, empty handed.

I have just been on their site and found that it accepts up to 1/4" which is 6.35mm. What a b**tard!!

Unfortunately for the manager, I am the type of person who gives praise when due and complains like a man possessed when I get **** sevice.

Thanks again for the replies.

Sorry, went to bed just after posting last night, and consequently didn't see your follow up question....looks like your sorted now though...as David says. eye protection is imperative.

LOL @ rs comment..

no.. dont work for them.. work for Ventura.. need a call centre solution?

They just sell quality stuff, not the cheapest ever but NEVER had a problem..

otherwise its ebay or the states for tct cutters.. if you find a cheap source let me know..

Diesel and wd40 work well for cutting ally.. steel seems fine on its own.. maybe a little wd40 / oil.. / cutting lubricant.

Rotozip router/die grinder will accept 1/4 and 6mm bits

Flexible shaft demel (professional jobbie about £230) will also accept them, and better bet if you want to do a fair bit of work, it's easy to use, foot pedal blah blah blah.

For air die grinder, Halfrauds do the SIP ones, which seem nice, Machinemart too.
