As Above!! The steering is very heavy at idle (like no assist), But when reved to around 2000rpm it feels normal.. Cheaked the fluid and looks ok. any ideas on what it might be???

I had this problem a while back. Turned out to be the fluid as I didn't check via the dipstick. The level looked OK but it took another 500ml!!

Well the fluid is now full (and more!) and still no better even after a good run in.

I had the same problem a few months back after a major service. An O-ring had gone in the power steering system and for a while the steering was really heavy intermittently. However, it went away before I did anything about it. This morning i get in the car try and it's like driving a tank!

Can I bleed the system anywhere? Would air in the system cause such a problem??

Air lock can cause this, but normally running the steering from lock to lock with the engine running would normally push any air out.

So maybe a problem elsewhere such as a sticking relief valve

Have you checked the alternator belt (I know that's not the correct name for it). If its slack it will affected the power steering. Apparently the pump is related. I had a similar problem with my Legacy Turbo. I adjusted the tensioner and it is now fine. Do not over tighten it. It still needs a bit of play in it. See if that is the problem first before you go and screw your car up I could be wrong u know!!!

Did you get it sorted Mark! Was it the pump?
