My 01-02 WRX did this recently, On advice from peeps on here i cleaned the MAF with brake cleaner (aerosol). Use only one that leaves no residue of any form. I think it cured mine........ so far any way.
It was throwing a CEL and fault code P0171. Havent had it re-set yet due to a one month driving ban

Hi, mpg seems fine and it's just had a new lambda. It's ok when cold, but it starts after it has warmed up (quite a long time after). It fluctuates between about 6 and 800 revs.

Right, just sprayed half a ton of brake cleaner on the Maf and it still appears to have a dodgy idle, it's only very slight at the moment but thats probably because it hasn't warmed up properly yet. Does anyone have any more ideas??

If the MAF has faile / is failing, cleaning it normall doesn't do much good. Its vert delicate, so even cleaning can sometimes damage it.
When its idling badly, unplug the MAF. See if the idle sorts itself... Make sure you plug it back in before driving.
