Question Crap air con performance...

Has anyone else thought that the air con in their scoob isn’t quite cold enough?

Used mine a couple of times this year but it just aint cold enough to make much of a difference. So, is this a common type of thing or would having it re charged/re gassed make any difference?

If so, where can i get it done and how much can i expect to pay?

Thanks

Chris

lol, nice one...

You might be able to get that done cheaper elsewhere. I wouldn't have thought it HAS to be done by Subaru. Clicky for you...

Had mine recharged at a Halfords/AA service centre. There appear to be two types of gas used in these cars, one they will recharge one they won't as there is a risk of it giving off gas resembling mustard gas...so the fitter said!...
Costs about 70-80 quid for a recharge, more if you want the dehumidifying crystals replaced...

Straight up,that's what he said...I know there are issues with the refrigerants...crystals might not be a good description of the dehumidifying part...but this part of the system is what causes the aircon to start stinking...when the dehumidifying crystals/gel/canister is exhausted...then bacteria breed and then cause a stink...

I see.. well yeah u wouldn't wanna breathe any of the gases..
I'd guess he was on about cleaning the condenser.
Perhaps thats why air con seems to loose some efficiency, remember thinking same in last car, air con cooled but wasn't really cold, had the gas checked, said it was ok. Remember it was at a main dealer (not subaru btw) free check, charge if needed re-gasing etc. but surprisingly said was fine.

I'm sure that the efficency drops off with time...and the gas gets lost from the system...theres only approx 700 grammes by weight in the system so you only need to loose a small amount for it to become less effective, but still cooling to some extent..thats what mine was doing....After they had re-filled it was much better, you could obviously feel it,and temp readings taken in the air vents before and after showed it was chilling by about 12-15 degrees more...I think they check the pressure the systems operating at and if it's within an acceptable range then it doesn't need re-gasing...mine was at the bottom of this range and was still working...just!!!....perhaps yours was /is heading that way too....

Not wishing to upset anyone - I had a stone go through the exchange unit on mine a couple of years ago .... About 350 quid I seem to recall - that includes the re-gas...

My Air Con is cold.
I do use it for 5/6 mins each month to give it a turnover.
I do not know if this helps keep it in good condition, but I did read about it somewhere that this was reccomended. I would nt think this would stop any gasses escaping though !!!

It is a good idea to use it throughout the year. Not sure of the technical reasons.

I use mine all year round anyway. It doesn't just cool air...

Thanks for the replies, some interesting comments.
Triangle Subaru in Chesterfield are doing a 'gas recharge' for £75 plus VAT.

If it's going to make it much colder then its worth it, but im still not convinced it will work

Think i'll go down there this afternoon and ask some annoying questions

Yep, should be used for 5-10 mins every 2 weeks. This helps lubricate all the air-con seals.

Is also a good idea to use during the winter, clears the windows quicker from condensation.
