Default Which Turbo?

I'm getting the turbo replaced in my Imprezza. SCC recommend upgrading to a VF34 at £850 (including v.a.t.) and £175 labour.
Anyone got one? Any other suggestions?
The price gives me a headache, but maybe it'll be worth it?

If it is a 96 model year it will probably be a TD05. Why not get your original turbo overhauled?

This will be cheaper, and is one of the advantages of a TD05 over a VF34. If you VF34 pops it not economically repairable.

The VF34 is not a bad turbo, but it doesn't spool up any better than a TD05 and has a lower top end potential.

There is a real risk of Emperor's new clothes here!

Throw us a frickin' bone! </dr evil> Are you talking about a UK market car, Japanese import WRX, STi or what?

Also, is this price for a brand new VF34, and does the £175 labour cost include the price of the remap necessary to make the turbo work optimally, especially if you have any other mods on the car?

Without you giving any more details, it's impossible to say for certain, but it sounds as though you're going to be sold an expensive turbo that won't be an unqualified improvement over what you've already got, and won't have the additional work necessary to get the most out of it unless you shell out even more of your hard-earned.

As John says, there are more cost-effective options out there.

O.K. U.K. market. No modifications.
Sounds like there's some good advice coming.

Saloon or wagon? If it's a saloon, John's suggestion about rebuilding the turbo would probably be the way to go.

Incidentally, why the motivation to change it in the first place? Is it worn/knackered, or are you just after more power? If the latter, you can get a handy power hike without even touching the turbo, provided it's in good nick at the moment.

Knackered. It started smoking after I put my foot down Sunday Night. AA man said it was the Turbo. No heat or noise indicating possible hole in piston, but I don't know?

It's a Saloon
