silly question i know, but what sort of damage can you do when you go into the red to many times?
and why does the power just die?

Power dies as it hits the rev limiter..

As to damage.. bit of an unknown.. probably be fine.. or could let go tomorrow.

Accelerated engine wear, increased risk of (undetected) detonation, take your pick.

and why does the power just die?
It dies when you hit the limiter because the spark and fuelling is being cut.

However, all this is moot. Your car will be mapped to deliver its optimum output considerably below the red line on the revcounter. There's simply no point caning it into the red, it'll go faster if you keep engine speeds in the general area between peak torque and peak power.
