Default Burning smell from the engine-any ideas?

I've noticed a burning smell in the cabin for some weeks now but have struggled to identify the problem. Its not evident on every drive but tends to be on my way home (I liver near a dual carriageway so 70mph plus speeds are normal and I also put the car straight in the garage which is on a slight hill).

Now at first I suspected it may be the clutch but I'm not too sure. Last night I opened the bonnet and finally saw some dense smoke rising from the area around the turbo. If the turbo was on its way out would I see smoke from here is it it most likely to be the clutch which is the original item (has 76k on the clock).

Hoping its the turbo as I plan to upgrade to a TD05 anyway but your thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards

Rob

If the turbo was on its way, you'd be more likely to see smoke coming out the exhaust than you would be to see it coming from the outside of the turbo itself.

If the smoke is coming "from the area around the turbo" (any chance you could be more specific?), likeliest causes would be leaking oil or coolant feeds. You need to take a closer look to ascertain exactly where it's coming from, and keep a very close eye on your oil and coolant levels until it's sorted.

BTW...

If your journey almost literally takes you from the dual to your house, I take it you give the car a good minute or two to tick over before turning the engine off???

how about the drive shaft?
mine shed its grease and was dropping a little oil onto the down pipe, it stunk to high heaven I can tell you.
strip down, clean, re grease and assemble is all that was needed.

could be?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes the car gets a minute or so to cool down although I never literally thrash it anyway. Radiator was replaced recently so will check all hoses etc. That said coolant levels look to be maintained.

Cars in with Jap Innovations on the 22.04 so with a bit of luck they will be able to diagnose. Wishful thinking with the turbo I think. Would have been a lot easier to explain to the missus.

Thanks once again
