Default Strange noise

Hi, I've got a 2.0 Impreza Sport and when im off the throttle at about 2750-2850rpm i get a metallic whirring noise, almost like a scraping but not quite that serious sounding, sounds like its coming from the transmission/clutch. I ought to point out its only on deceleration, it stops when you accelerate, and it always occurs through that particular rev range without fail. Anyone else have this is a known problem or have I got something wrong? (more than likely knowing my luck). I also get a bit of a grind going into 2nd and 4th sometimes...

At the other end of the spectrum,
Might be a heat shield on the exhaust rattling or the brakelines vibrating on the bulk head..

Wouldn't explain the crunching though..

www.hdcsubaru.com for a secondhand gearbox if you find you need one..

yeah, sorry didn`t mean to sound too negative mate...

check the heatshields, normally rattle more from cold, get under and have a clonk around with the engine running, and check the clearance on the lines.. mine is making a clicking noise under the dash thats pissing me off this week, but its just part of the loom knocking, just cant seem to track down what part yet...

Right I don't think it's quite as terminal as crank damage as suggested, least I hope. It makes the noise in neutral, but...it doesn't if I disengage the clutch, it also makes a similar type of noise sometimes when disengaging the clutch to change gear very occasionally, so my guess is the clutch is on it's way out?

Wont be your crank because when you lift your clutch up and down your revs will go up and down if there is crank movement.

I would put my money on the mainshaft in your gerarbox, the bushes brake down and you get a whirring, grindy noise but can never seem to find it under the bonnet.

This can be repaired, my mate just had his done

Cheers red, any idea of the cost of getting them replaced so i'm not going in blind? I assume it means dropping the gearbox out. The noise has got better recently, I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing..

Well the noise has been fixed....rattling heatshield phew! Apparently got a noise wheel bearing too, but it seems okay otherwise.
