Does sound like the starter motor although they are usually rather strong and last for ever..

Try www.hdcsubaru.com or www.gradea-subaru.co.uk for a secondhand replacment or www.camskill.com I think sell them new.

Fit it yourself or get a local garage to do it.

Could be a badly worn starter ring if its a horrible metal to metal grinding sound. Had this on an old car once. Teeth on the ring totally worn away in a couple of places. the car would only start if the starter engaged on a part of the ring that wasn`t worn otherwise it sounded like a bag of nails.
