Post Engine Warning light

On the way home last night the engine warning light came on... I have a MY01 WRX Impreza.
Drove carefully home and consulted the manual.
Said it was do with the Emission control system and there was a fault, go to a local dealer.
If it flashes then drive very carefully and go ASAP to a dealer.
It was on constantly for me.

Anyway I had to pop out later to play squash
So whilst waiting in the car park for my mate to turn up I tried something i had read on scoobynet before. The engine was off and i pressed the accelerator to the floor and pressed the rear screen heater switch

This reset the fault indicator.

So far it hasnt come back on. if it does I will go to a dealer.

But i was wondering if anyone knew anything more?

Default Engine warning light

Same happened to me couple of weeks ago. Sent it straight to Subaru dealer
Came back with Faulty Knocklink sensor on the engine diagnostics equipment. New sensor £130 under warranty and no probs since, common fault ive been told. Mines an MY00 Turbo, dont know if this will apply to your 01

Cheers
im not too worried
cant go to dealers now as the light is off
but will as soon as it comes back on, if it does
still under warranty until september

the manual indicated it was emissions control as part of EU legislation that all cars must have emissions monitoring

its only just been serviced - 30k
and i had a thought that maybe its a service warning light? if they did not reset the ECU?
do they have warning lights for number of miles since last service? i just clocked up 8000 miles since the previous service the 22.5k so i thought it could be that...

anyone else with comments?

I had a warning light come on over xmas - steady on, not flashing. Turned out to be a sensor on the camshaft exceeded its limits, so they re-set it and suggested I book it in for replacement sensor. Not come on since.
