Unhappy piston 3 gone bye-bye

as above, so i've decided pretty much for certain that instead of engine rebuild(by myself) and possibly missing something else damaged, and also timescale, i will be trying to source an sti5 or 6 engine. does anyone know where to find one or even something else which will be as good as if not better?

thanks

Go for the 2.5l group buy

Failing that, Grade A Subaru or Town End Garage may be able to get one for you.

Presume yours is UK? It may be better going for a rebuild on the one you have rather than switching to an STi lump and having a remap etc... Not sure on exact details but a well buit (forged pistons / stronger rods etc etc) on the lump you have, may actually be stronger and give more room for mods. Having said that, im not sure how much an STi lump is.

This sounds familiar. Maybe he could get dij to do the job?

On a slightly more serious note, sorry to hear of your luck DRB5. If timescale/warranty are important, could be worth going for a recon exchange engine from somewhere like API...?

it was in the middst of a remap dbm so that isnt an issue as it has to be finished. timescale is a big issue so sourcing an engine is the first route as in order to keep costs down, i will be doing the work myself and will only do a rebuild myself(would be my first ever rebuild) without trying the easiest route first as i dont want to miss something else being damaged and have something go wrong again. thanks for the sympathy and frank if you could do that for me that would be great. i have treid api and a whole bunch of others but so far only grade-a(price is a bit ott for me), a guy from the US who is yet to get back to me about the price i offered him and turbo sports who have an sti engine but havent told me what version. let me know how you get on frank as i really have to sort it out asap, as i'm sure you can all imagine

Look up Charles Trent recyclers in Poole, they have a steady supply of STi's and are usually well priced. Only worry is, most STI engines have not been run as they should, and more prone to go pop, or be badly worn. I would advise splitting it open to check it, if you go down that route. The STi5/6 is the worst cluprit of this due to the dodgy maf / wrong fuel grade combo.

unfortunately i will be taking a chance in no matter what route i take, even getting proffesionals to do the work on it, which isn't a possibility as, like i said, tima is of the essence. also, where is best to get an uprated oil pump?

i will defo look into charles trent though. thanks

I know you want your car back but if you're going to be re-building it, and need new pistons anyway, why not just wait till you can afford it and go for the 2.5 shortblock. You may be surprised at how little you can do this for if you put the work in looking for the parts.

(And you know we need a 2.5l RB5 on the go to show these people how it's done )

Anyway good luck in your search, hope all goes well.
Dave.

cheers bud, but i work for a family run body repair centre and it is being sold VERY SOON. therefore the car cannot lie about or it will have nowhere to go soon. it's basically happened at the worst time. i'd like to go for the 2.5 and get it all done right, but **** happens and i have to bite the bullet

Yeah, he also said my car was fitted with some aftermarket madness because the MAF was different than the older models......

About a year and a half ago he also told me the only difference between the STI and UK engines was the chip (although by looking at the website this seems to have been solved now ).

Still if the price is good and you get some sort of guarentee.......

[QUOTE=greasemonkey]This sounds familiar. Maybe he could get dij to do the job?

He maybe taking taking the pi55 here, but do look at The thread titled DETONATION/MELTDOWN PISTON 2

It may save you time and money to say the very least.
A usefull place to find parts :www.1stchoice.co.uk or try 08717 171766 (247 spares) parts locator

Out of interest ,what: mileage did it go at,fuel did you use, safety features did you have in place.

!Dont rush into anything!
Good luck

thanks again. i was useing optimax, but it looks as though the oil probably didn't help. it was the halfords fully synthetic stuff. i will always say it was the MAF going that started it though. when it went, there was smoke coming out of it and well....the usual things that happen.

Powerstation have a few JDM STI (9?) bottom ends for sale left over from cars they convert into the Type 25 - they quoted me £800 for the complete short engine.

As for oil, try speaking to TSL about Silkolene Pro-S fully synthetic - about £6/litre.

I'm in the same boat here exept my piston managed to end up outside the block due to a rather large injection of nitrous

I was in on the 2.5 GB until I worked out costs so I've been hunting round for a second hand engine but all i've managed to find so far is a smokey high miler for £750.

Its a MY98 UK Turbo and was wondering if a MY96 WRX short engine would be OK? I'm planning on selling the car when sorted so don't want to throw too much money at it.

Do you know why it failed? Please say it wasn't due to what happened in this thread...

well.....i cant say it is directly related to changing the dv, but i cant say otherwise. the cause looks like a mass amount of things put together. obviously you've remembered that old thread, but there were also other threads which i started/joined in on about problems i was having. all i can say is every problem has stemed from the MAF failing. from there it's been one running problem after another. things haven't helped one another, but now that another engine has been ordered(came fromk an sti 6), everything can hopefully be put behind me once it's fitted and running ok, also the map being finished.

I cant beleive drb5 didnt see it coming with all the safety.
So am I right in saying the ting about tech wizrd?

Feel sorry for you drb5 but im glad someone else is sharing the pain.
Just goes to show im not the only one.

why are you going for the sti engine?
You realise more modding will be required and then insurance will cost you more?

(Still as they say 'great minds think alike')
