I had the same problem (which has been covered on a couple of different threads recently). The handbook on my MY03 WRX says something like 10w30, but when I phoned the dealer to check they said that they had been using 5w40 fully synthetic following a Technical note from Subaru. They had trouble with a couple of engines which the change seems to have sorted out (apparently they have been doing this on all new age cars).

I'd like to know what 5/50 it is they're using. The only 5/50 I know of now is Valvoline Synpower. Mobil1 used to be 5/50 before they changed to 0/40 years ago. Most fully synthetic oils are 0/40 or 5/40 with Castrol, Mobil, Motul etc offering higher viscosities as well.
Sounds like another dealer with little clue?
