Default Mods on WRX STi6???

Ok, just bought a Jap-spec classicshape MY00 WRX STi, 21000km on the clock. car is standard except for K&N cone filter & silicone intake pipe.

I am planning on doing the following:

VF23 turbo
3" performance exhaust + Downpipe
MRT TMS3 boost controller + waterspray
GFB lightened pulleys
MRT Top mount intercooler
MRT Modded fuel rail + regulator (to prevent Cyl n2 fuelling problems)

I dont plan on running more than 1.1 bar boost on 102RON racing fuel

Can anyone tell me what engine block this car runs (eg semi closed deck??)

I would like to know if there are any dangers with the above mods, I have heard that the STi6 motors are fragile?? if anyone has any experience I would really appreciate some input!!

My opinion:

Skip the VF23 as it is not a lot more powerful than the VF28 (or similar) you already have.

Waterspray and boost controller money would be better spent on an ECU remap.

Block is open deck.

Don't think that fuel rails are the total answer to fuelling issues on different cylinders.

STi motors are not fragile, detonation is the usual cause of failure.

I would suggest:

Fuel pump and regulator
ECU remap
Exhaust manifold/uppipe
3" Exhaust

If you want to improve the intercooler go straight for a FMIC.
If you want a better bolt on turbo without excessive lag and 400+ BHP potential try a TD05/06-20G hybrid. Best results tend to be achieved at 1.4 to 1.5 bar on this turbo, although you can use far less and run it very efficiently.

If you only want to run 1.1 bar you might be better sticking with your VF28 - this is only 0.1 bar higher than an STi6 runs at the top anyway!

What budget and what power did you have in mind?

Thanks for your input John, much appreciated

Reason why I wanted to drop in a VF23 is that I already have one fro my old WRX, thought it might have been worthwhile for a bit of extra grunt at high RPM, but youseem to think that the VF28 is up to the job??

I already have an MRT top-mount and front mount kits are very expensive here in SA.

I am not really looking at high power outputs, would be happy with around 175kw-180kw ATW (around 230bhp-235bhp ATW)

The reason why I am going for the EBC is that I have considered an ECUTek ECU remap, but its still in its infancy here and I am not keen on experiment, thing is they download the parameters and fine tune it then, without using a dyno!! To be honest that scares me!!

I have already ordered a fuel pressure regulator (comes with the modded fuel rail)

Do you think that an upgraded fuel pump is a must for that power output??

The TEK ECU is strongly proven on here and loads of people use them, and have done for a couple of years. Its a million times better than using a boost controller

Guess if you need a custom map, you might be stuffed with lack of mappers over there though. I've used an off the shelf MAP from John before, and it was very good.

I have never read a complaint from anybody on here regarding their Ecutek'd ECU. Same in the Netherlands. Looks like the UK mappers, Mark from EMS in The Netherlands and Richard Dowser in Switzerland know their stuff.

It's seems to be a different story in OZ though from what I have read on the various forums over there. Quite a few complaints.

Cheers,

George.

Thanks people. The only question left is whether to use the VF23 I got or stick with the VF28??

Why dont you people fancy the boost controller??
I dont question the ECUTek programmes, what I am not sure is if the people here actually know how to set it up properly.

Wink

Pitzi I have a late sti 5 that is running 240bhp ATW on 98ron fuel only, which is more than your after and all I have done is an ecutek remap full decat exhaust and HKS panel filter.

Sell your spare turbo and put the money towards an off the shelf ecutek mapped ecu.

Also get the fuel pump and regulator just to be on the safe side.
