Question Non starter

After a 4 week hibernation in the garage, my MY99 Turbo has developed a starter problem (I've eliminated the battery and the alarm as being at fault). When the ignition is turned to "Start" I get a rapid machine gun "chatter" from the starter motor housing and no engine turnover. I suspect the solenoid, although I haven't checked the continuity of the earth from the starter. Anyone any ideas as to how I can confirm/reject my diagnosis? I want to be sure as my dealer parts dept. has quoted £268 + VAT + £100 exchange surcharge for a replacement starter motor (solenoids don't come separately).
Any help appreciated!

Had exactly the same noise out of mine when I flattened the battery by being a tit.

How have you 'eliminated the battery'?

I meant that the battery tests OK, but now you've got me wondering......!

Agree it sounds like the battery.. the starter motors are pretty strong and rarely fail.

how have you tested it.. it might be at 12v but being pulled under when the starter is cranked.. recharge the battery or jump start the car off another.

Guys thanks - you were right. I'd already tried jump starting without success, but now I've charged the battery and she goes! I think I need to revise my battery testing method. Now I'm the tit!

Thanks again
